Role of the European Union in solving the conflict in Syria

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce jsou role Evropské unie, kterých se zhostila při řešení konfliktu v Sýrii. Jedná se o válečný konflikt, ze kterého plynou velmi vážné humanitární důsledky v podobě milionů uprchlíků, nedostatku základních potřeb pro obyvatele Sýrie, jejich násilné vysídlování z jejich domovů. EU si je vědoma tohoto zásadního násilného konfliktu, při kterém umírají lidé a snaží se ho aktivně vyřešit. Tato práce si klade za cíl charakterizovat role EU při řešení tohoto konfliktu, jde o role politické, vojenské a humanitární. Druhým cílem je zjistit, proč EU doposud nebyla úspěšná při snaze konflikt diplomaticky ukončit, a to i přes miliardové investice a přijetí desítek různých rolí. Práce charakterizuje samotný válečný konflikt v Sýrii a také Společnou zahraniční a bezpečnostní politiku EU, v rámci které EU přijímá opatření působící na konflikt v Sýrii. Dále analyzuje jednotlivé role, které EU přijala a vyhodnocuje účinnost opatření EU. Práce je uceleným průnikem do doposud nevyřešeného konfliktu v Sýrii, který bude i v budoucnu stěžejním tématem mnohých jednání.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis seeks to analyze the role of the European Union which it played in solving the conflict in Syria. It is a war conflict with very serious humanitarian consequences in the form of millions of refugees, a lack of basic needs for the people of Syria and their forced displacement from their homes. The EU is aware of this fundamental and violent conflict which has caused the death of a vast number of people and actively tries to resolve it. This work aims to characterize the role of the EU and define its political, military and humanitarian roles. The second objective is to determine the reason why the EU has not succeeded in ending the conflict diplomatically, despite receiving large financial investments and accepting various different roles. The thesis characterizes the war conflict in Syria itself, as well as the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, which display the EU´s measures affecting the conflict in Syria. Furthermore, it analyzes the various roles the EU has taken over the last decade and assesses the effectiveness of the actions taken by the EU. All in all, this work represents a comprehensive research of the still unresolved syrian conflict which will continue to be the main topic of many negotiations in the future.
