Dramaturgy of a Theatrical Poster: On the Aesthetics and Poetics of Graphic Design in Theatres

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá otázku, co je ‚divadelního‘ na divadelních plakátech, a to na materiálu od knihtiskových cedulí 18. století přes ilustrovaný plakát 19. a 20. století po soudobé vizuální identity a konceptuální kampaně na sociálních sítích. V souladu s teorií řečového jednání (J. L. Austin) a estetikou performativity (E. Fischer-Lichteová) lze plakát ve výlepu, tj. situovaný v časoprostoru, chápat jako performativ, resp. performanci. Plakáty a divadlo jsou obojí zvláštní realizací obrazu a textu; ilustrují přechod z orální přes typografickou kulturu k obrazové kultuře v současnosti (M. McLuhan, N. Mirzoeff). Plakátové obrazy se podílejí na konstrukci tzv. významových představ dramatických osob a dějišť (O. Zich). S E. Goffmanem a J. Butlerovou lze plakát, jakož i divadlo mít za performanci identity herecké postavy či divadelní instituce. S referencí k I. Osolsobě práce vysvětluje, jak je vizuální komunikace divadel zahrnuta do divadelní komunikace.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the question of what is ‘theatrical’ in theatre posters. Examples from eighteenth century letterpress playbills, nineteenth and twentieth century illustrated lithographic posters and contemporary conceptual campaigns in social media are explored. In accordance with speech act theory (J. L. Austin) and aesthetics of performativity (E. Fischer-Lichte), posters displayed on a wall, i.e. situated in a certain space, could be understood as both performative and performance. Posters and theatre are special realisations of image and text which illustrate the transition from oral to typographic and contemporary image-oriented culture (M. McLuhan, N. Mirzoeff). The imagery on posters contribute to the construction of so-called semantic images of dramatic characters and places (based on O. Zich). According to E. Goffman and J. Butler, posters and theatre could be understood as identity performances of actors, characters, or theatrical institutions. Drawing on I. Osolsobě, the dissertation further explains how visual communication participates in overall theatrical communication.
