How do investors - fans perform? The asymmetric reaction to defeats and victories on World Championship in Football

Abstract:

Abstrakt Práce zkoumá efekt výsledků fotbalových reprezentací z šampionátů v letech 1998 až 2012 na místní burzovní indexy. Při restrikci dat na zápasy, po nichž se obchoduje na burze, byl v regresní analýze zaznamenán významný oboustranný vliv na vývoj indexů (přes 20 procentních bodů). Nepotvrdilo se zjištění předchozích výzkumů o větším efektu proher oproti výhrám. Pro vysvětlení se nabízí větší počet pozitivních překvapení než zklamání, či rychlejší vyprchávání špatné nálady po prohrách.

Abstract:

This paper investigates the effect of national football teams' outcomes on local stock market indeces. Data contains championships held between 1998 and 2012. There was found the significant bipartite influence on a stock return (over 20 basic points) in an econometric analysis with the attention on the fixtures played before the trading day. The higher impact of defeats founded by previous reasearches wasn't confirmed by this study. This may be caused by the higher amount of surprise wins compared to the unexpected losses. Another possible explanation is based on the faster evaporating mood after the lost games.
