The effect of perceived threat on support for restrictive policies

Abstract:

Občanské svobody patří mezi jeden z pilířů moderní demokracie a právě jimi se zabývá konstrukt podpory restriktivní politiky, který lze definovat jako ochotu lidí vzdát se svých občanských svobod ve prospěch restriktivnější politiky. Teoreticky tento konstrukt vychází z přístupu politické tolerance. Tato práce zkoumá vliv vnímané hrozby na tuto ochotu a konceptualizace vnímané hrozby vychází z meziskupinové teorie hrozby, která rozlišuje realistickou a symbolickou hrozbou. Práce se dále zabývá vlivem některých individuálních proměnných na podporu restriktivní politiky, které byly určeny na základě dosavadních teoretických zjištění. Konkrétně se jedná o nejvyšší dosažené vzdělání, autoritářství, empatii, self-esteem a národní identitu. Nakonec byly zkoumány mediační a moderační vlivy některých proměnných. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 309 respondentů ve věku 16 až 80 let. Všechny proměnné byly měřeny prostednictvím dotazníku. Data byla statisticky analyzována metodou mnohonásobné lineární regrese, mediační a moderační analýzy. Výsledky ukazují, že autoritářství, realistická a symbolická hrozba jsou signifikantní prediktory podpory restriktivní politiky. Statisticky významný vliv měla také empatie, avšak tento efekt byl přesně opačný, než předpokládala zde uvedená hypotéza. Realistická a symbolická hrozba měly signi-fikantní mediační vliv na vztah národní identity a podpory restriktivní politiky, ale pouze realistická hrozba měla významný mediační účinek na vztah autoritářství a podpory restriktivní politiky. Self-esteem se neukázal být signifikantní moderátorem ani v jednom ze vztahů vnímané hrozby a podpory restriktivní politiky. Na druhou stranu, empatie se ukázala být významným moderátorem vztahu symbolické hrozby a podpory restriktivní politiky, nicméně síla tohoto vlivu je velice malá.

Abstract:

Civil liberties are one of the fundamental components of democracy and civil liberties trade-off construct is based on them. This construct means willingness of people to trade-off their liberties for more restrictive policy and its theoretical background is based on political tolerance approach. This study examines the effect of perceived threat and some individual variables on this willingness. Conceptualization of perceived threat for this study is based on Intergroup Threat Theory which distinguishes realistic and symbolic threats. As for the individual variables, highest education level, authoritarianism, self-esteem, empathy and national identity were chosen according to existing theory. Also there were examined mediation and moderation effects of some of these variables. The sample consisted of 309 respondents in the age of 16 to 80 years. All of the variables were measured by using questionnaire. Data were statistically analysed using multilinear regression model, mediation and moderation analysis. Results show that authoritarianism, realistic and symbolic threats are significant predictors of civil liberties trade-off. Empathy also has signifi-cant effect, but this effect was the in the contrary to hypothesis of this study. Realistic and symbolic threats were significant mediators of relationship between national identity and civil liberties trade-off but only realistic threat was a significant mediator of relationship between authoritarianism and civil liberties trade-off. Self-esteem has no moderation effects on relationships between types of perceived threat and civil liber-ties trade-off. On the other hand, empathy was a significant moderator of relationship between symbolic threat and civil liberties trade-off, although this effect was very small.
