Reasons of decline in trade union membership in time period 2006 - 2016

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza vlivu jednotlivých proměnných na pokles členství v odborech v Irsku mezi lety 2006 až 2016. Teoretická část je věnována ekonomii odborů, konkrétně odborovým teoriím, kolektivnímu vyjednávání, odborovému kongresu, vývoji odborů a vlivům působícím na rozhodování zaměstnanců o vstupu do odborů. V praktické části jsou testovány hypotézy o vlivu jednotlivých faktorů na pokles členství v odborech. Mezi faktory patří míra cenové inflace, míra mzdové inflace, míra nezaměstnanosti a hustota odborů. Ke zkoumání vlivu byly použity časové řady za období 2006-2016 v ročních intervalech a model adoptovaný od Baina a Elsheikha (1976). Z výsledku analýzy modelu plyne, že mezi exogenní proměnné, které mají statisticky významný vliv na členství v odborech, patří míra mzdové inflace, míra cenové inflace a odborová hustota. Oproti tomu míra nezaměstnanosti patří mezi nezávislé proměnné, které nejsou statisticky významné a lze zamítnout hypotézu o jejím vlivu na členství v odborech v Irsku.

Abstract:

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to analyze the reasons of the decline in trade union membership in Ireland between years 2006 and 2016. The theoretical part is devoted to the economics of trade unions, in particular trade union theories, collective bargaining, trade union congresses, development of trade unions and influences affecting employee decision-making. In the practical part, individual hypotheses on the influence of individual factors on the decline in trade union membership were tested. Factors include the rate of price inflation, the rate of wage inflation, the unemployment rate and the rate of union density. Time series for the period 2006-2016 at annual intervals and a model adopted from Bain and Elsheikh (1976) were used to examine the effect. The results of the analysis of the main model shows that exogenous variables that have a statistically significant effect on trade union membership are rate of wage inflation, rate of price inflation and union density. On the other hand, unemployment rate is independent variable that is not statistically significant and hypothesis of its impact on the change in union membership in Ireland can be rejected.
