Electoral geography of contemporary Turkey

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá volební geografií Turecké republiky v parlamentních volbách do Velkého národního shromáždění konaných po posledním vojenském převratu mezi lety 1987 až 2007. V teoretické části jsou stručně popsány hlavní metody a obory volební geografie, dále je v krátkosti představena Turecká republika, její historický vývoj, obyvatelstvo, politický, volební a stranický systém. Čtenáři jsou seznámeni se sedmi nejdůležitějšími politickými stranami, které se v posledních šesti parlamentních volbách dokázaly probojovat do tureckého parlamentu. Praktická část práce se věnuje popisu a analýze výše zmíněných parlamentních voleb, vysvětluje chování tureckých voličů, jejich prostorové rozložení a případné změny v průběhu času. Zabývá se také dalšími souvislostmi, jako jsou vztah turecké společnosti k evropské integraci či postavení menšin. Na základě zpracovaných statistických dat jsou pro jednotlivé strany popsány a vysvětleny území jejich stabilní volební podpory a volební nepodpory a korelace volebních výsledků pro jednotlivé roky. Závěrečná část práce se pokouší o regionalizaci Turecka podle dlouhodobých volebních preferencí. Vše je doplněno o bohatou mapovou přílohu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with electoral geography of the Republic of Turkey in the parliamentary elections into The Grand National Assembly which were held between the years 1987 and 2007, after a last military coup. In a theoretical part there are in brief described the basic methods and fields of electoral geography and introduced Republic of Turkey, its history, population, political, electoral and party system. The readers are made acquainted with seven most important political parties which have managed to get into the Turkish parliament in the last six parliamentary elections. A practical part of the thesis attends to description and analysis of the parliamentary elections mentioned above, explains a behavior of Turkish voters, their spatial distribution and the eventual changes over time. It also deals with other chains of events, such as a relation of Turkish society towards European integration or a situation of minorities. On the basis of the processed statistical data are for each party described and explained the areas of stable electoral support and the correlations of election returns for various years. A final part of the thesis attempts to determine the Turkish regions according to long-lasting electoral preferences. The thesis is complemented by abundant map attachment.
