Language teaching by John Amos Comenius, The Gate of Languages Unlocked – selective transcription and commentary

Abstract:

The main subject of my diploma thesis is transcription and analysis of selected German chapters from the book The Gate of Languages unlocked (Janua linguarum reserata). The author of the book is John Amos Comenius and the book can be included in the late phase of the period of the Early New High German (the so-called Frühneuhochdeutsch). The work consists of several parts. The theoretical part describes Comenius life, his pedagogical and didactical opinions, the historical context and the school system in Moravia and Bohemia in the 17th century. The practical part deals with the transcription of the work itself, a brief analysis of specific areas (morphology, syntax, phonetics) in which it differs from modern German. The analysis is supported by the topical scholarly literature and supplemented by specific examples from the transcribed text. Based on these steps the didactic concept of the book is analysed,mainly through a comparison of the known pedagogical and didactical principles of John Amos Comenius and their application in a specific textbook.

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem mojí diplomové práce je transkripce a analýza německé verze vybraných kapitol z knihy Brána jazyků otevřená (Janua linguarum reserata). Autorem knihy je Jan Amos Komenský a časově ji lze zařadit do pozdní fáze rané nové horní němčiny (Frühneuhochdeutsch). Práce se skládá z více částí. V teoretické části je popsán Komenského život, jeho pedagogické a didaktické názory, dobový historický kontext a školní systém na Moravě a v Čechách v 17. století. Praktická část se zabývá samotnou transkripcí díla, analýzou konkrétních oblastí (morfologie, syntax, fonetika), ve kterých se odlišuje od moderní němčiny. Analýza je podložena odbornou literaturou a doplněna konkrétními příklady z transkribovaného textu. V návaznosti na to je analyzován didaktický koncept díla; pozornost je věnována zejména srovnání známých pedagogických a didaktických principů Jana Amose Komenského a jejich uplatnění v konkrétním učebnicovém textu.
