The Motivation of Roma to Education - ethnic or sociocultural condicionality?

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce usiluje o analýzu toho, zda je motivace u příslušníků romského etnika ovlivněna jejich etnicitou či prostředím, v němž žijí a vyrůstají. První část, teoretická, seznamuje čtenáře se základními termíny interkulturní psychologie vztahujícími se k problematice etnických menšin. Pozornost je rovněž věnována motivaci, která jakožto intrapsychický proces objasňuje, jak vnitřní pochody osobnosti jedince ovlivňují jeho vztah ke škole a vzdělávacímu procesu. Opomenut není ani vliv sociálního a kulturního prostředí na oblast vzdělávání Romů, jelikož vztah člověka ke škole je z převážné části ovlivněn jeho sociokulturním zázemím, objemem kulturního a sociálního kapitálu. V neposlední řadě se práce zabývá základními charakteristikami romských rodin, jež se promítají do výchovně vzdělávací oblasti. Druhá část, výzkumná, se prostřednictvím kvalitativní výzkumné strategie snaží objasnit, jaký význam přikládají vzdělání příslušníci romského etnika pocházející z odlišného sociálního a kulturního prostředí a jaké faktory mohly mít případný vliv na jejich vzdělanostní dráhu.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates whether the motivation of the Romany population is affected by their ethnicity or by the environment in which they are raised in and live. The first, theoretical, part familiarizes readers with fundamental concepts of intercultural psychology, focusing mainly on the problematics of ethnic minorities. Attention is also devoted to the motivational term, intrapsychic process, which sheds light on the internal processes of an individual?s personality and how these processes affect attitudes towards school and the educational process. As humanity's relationship to school is largely influenced by its socio-cultural background and by the volume of cultural and social capital, the influence of both social and cultural environments, in terms of the Romany population?s educational issue, has not been omitted. This thesis also focuses on basic characteristics of Romany families concerning the educational issue. The second part of this thesis uses qualitative research strategies to attempt to clarify how much importance the Romany people attribute to education since they come from different social and cultural environments. Factors that may have impacted their educational path have also been considered.
