John Malalas' Chronicle: Its Language and Style

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou jazykové klasifikace kroniky Ióanna Malala (6. stol.). V první části je problematizována "lidovost" Malalova projevu a řešena je otázka jeho příslušnosti k nízkému, event. střednímu stylu. Zohledněny jsou faktory ovlivňující výběr jazyka a stylistickou úroveň díla (excerpce z jiných pramenů, literární žánr, sociální postavení autora, předpokládaná čtenářská obec). Ve druhé části práce je na vybraných jevech proveden rozbor Malalova jazyka a stylu. Pozornost je věnována struktuře tzv. administrativního stylu, zejména participiálním konstrukcím a participiím místo určitých sloves. Dále je v souvislosti s přesunem slovesa na začátek výpovědi provedena analýza slovosledu (použita je metoda pragmatického rozboru) a pozice osobních nepřízvučných zájmen ve funkci předmětu. Na závěr je zkoumáno parataktické uspořádání textu, a to jak syndetické (spojka "kai", ostatní spojovací částice), tak asyndetické.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the issue of language classification of John Malalas' Chronicle (6th cent.). In the first part, the phenomenon of "vulgarity" of its language is problematized and the question of the level of its style, i.e. low or middle style Greek, is discussed. Factors exercising influence on language choice and stylistic level of the work (excerption from other sources, literary genre, author's social status, supposed readership) are taken into consideration. In the second part, the thesis examines Malalas' language and style on selected phenomena. Attention is paid to the structure of the so-called "administrative style", particularly to participle constructions and participles functioning as finite verbs. Furthermore, considering the shift of the verb to the clause-initial position, word order is analysed (using a pragmatic approach) and the position of weak pronouns studied. As a conclusion, paratactic ordering of the text is examined, including the syndetic (conjunction "kai" and other connecting particles), as well as asyndetic parataxis.
