Charakteristickým rysem současné doby je rostoucí počet rizikových faktorů, se kterými se podniky setkávají. Riziko ovlivňuje prosperitu podniků, jejich hospodářské výsledky i jejich samotnou existenci. Vybudování efektivního managementu rizika se proto stává nedílnou součástí řízení podniku.
