Psychologists motivation for alternative therapeutic approach

Abstract:

Výzkum byl zaměřen na zjištění motivace psychologů k praktikování alternativních metod a terapií New age. Teoretická část je věnována vymezení a kategorizaci alternativních terapií a dále přímo kategorii terapií New age, a to nejprve jejich charakteristice a poté některým diskutovaným problematickým aspektům těchto terapií. Poslední kapitola věnovaná terapiím New age se zabývá společnými rysy těchto terapií s některými uznanými terapeutickými směry. Druhá část teoretické části se věnuje motivaci psychoterapeutů v rámci jejich profese, a to od počáteční motivace budoucích psychoterapeutů k volbě psychoterapeutické profese, přes pracovní motivaci zkušených psychoterapeutů, až po motivací terapeutů při volbě terapeutické orientace. Výzkum byl realizován kvalitativně, zúčastnilo se ho jedenáct respondentů, s nimiž byly vedeny polostrukturované rozhovory.Výsledkem je seznam témat vztahujících se k motivaci psychologů praktikovat alternativní metody a terapie. Mezi nejčastější uvedené motivy patří přesvědčení o účinnosti alternativní metody, či terapie, subjektivně vnímané přínosy alternativní metody, či terapie pro klienty, zájem o alternativní myšlení a přístupy,pocit osobního a profesního naplnění v alternativní oblasti a kritické hodnocení klasických přístupů, včetně vymezení se vůči nim. K motivaci přispívají i vnímané osobní přínosy pro terapeuta, kritické hodnocení neodborného přístupu alternativních terapeutů, včetně vymezení se vůči němu, vnější vlivy a některé spirituální motivy. Nejméně uváděným motivem bylo přesvědčení o souladu poznatků soudobé vědy s předpoklady alternativních terapií.

Abstract:

The research was focused on finding psychologists motivation to practice alternative methods of psychology and New Age therapies. The theoretical part deals with the definition and categorization of alternative therapies and treatments. Furthermore, it is also focused on the New Age therapies category as such; in the beginning characterization is given followed by discussion of various problematic aspects of these therapies. The last chapter on New Age therapies deals with features these therapies have in common with some acknowledged therapeutic strategies. In the second part the theoretical motivation of psychotherapists throughout their profession is dealt with; not only the initial motivation for the choice of psychotherapeutic profession, but also the motivation of experienced psychotherapists and motivation in the choice of therapeutic orientation in the first place. The research was carried out qualitatively, attended by eleven respondents with whom semi-structured interviews were conducted. The result is a list of topics related to the motivation of the psychologists to practice alternative methods and therapies. The most common motives include confidence in the effectiveness of alternative methods or therapies, the positives subjectively perceived by clients, the overall interest in alternative thinking and approach, the sense of personal and professional fulfillment in the field and critical evaluation of traditional approaches, including the opposition to them. Further contributions to the motivation are the personal benefits perceived by the therapists themselves, their critical evaluation of alternative approaches, including the opposition to them, external influences and some spiritual motives. Moreover, the least reported motive was the belief of correspondence of the contemporary scientific knowledge with the assumptions of alternative therapies.
