Teaching Culture in an Upper Secondary School in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je výuka reálií na středních školách. Teoretická část se snaží definovat, co jsou reálie a jak se tento pojem vyvíjel. Následně zkoumá, jak se pojem reálie týká výuky jazyků, analyzuje různé metody a přístupy, které ovlivňují způsob, jakým se kultura dnes vyučuje. Přezkoumává také vzdělávací dokumenty, které určují, jak se na českých středních školách vyučují jazyky a kulturní témata. Analýza je zaměřena na jeden konkrétní školní komplex v České republice, kterého ŠVP je krátce přezkoumáno a představuje další materiály pro specifický kulturní kurz. Rozhovor se dvěma učiteli z této školy je veden s cílem diskutovat o jejich postoji ke kultuře výuky, o tom, jak se učí ve škole a kolik času věnují kulturním tématům. Nakonec jsou analyzovány dvě učebnice, Maturita Solutions Intermediate 2nd Edition a Gateway to Maturita B1 2nd Edition, které se v této škole používají pro střední školy, aby se zjistilo, zda jsou dostatečné pro přípravu studentů na ústní část Maturitní zkoušky z hlediska kulturního obsahu. Zkoumá také, jak učebnice prezentují kulturu a zda se snaží prosazovat interkulturní kompetence a kulturní povědomí.

Abstract:

The topic of this diploma thesis is teaching culture in upper-secondary schools. The theoretical part tries to define what culture is and how the term developed. Subsequently it explores how the term culture relates to teaching languages and examines various methods and approaches that influence the way culture is taught today. It also reviews the educational documents, which determine how are languages and cultural topics taught in the Czech upper-secondary schools. The analysis is focused on one particular school complex in the Czech Republic, from which the SEP is shortly revised and extra materials for cultural courses discussed. An interview with two teachers from this school is conducted to discuss their attitude towards teaching culture, how is it taught at their school and how much time they devote to cultural topics. Lastly, there is an analysis of two textbooks, Maturita Solutions Intermediate 2nd Edition and Gateway to Maturita B1 2nd Edition, used at this school for upper-secondary level, to find out, whether they are sufficient in preparing the students for the Oral part of the Maturita exam in terms of cultural content. It also examines how the textbooks present culture and whether it tries to promote intercultural competences and cultural awareness.
