The application of generalized and mixed regression models in forest mensuration

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá uplatněním zobecněných a smíšených regresních modelů v dendrometrii. Všechny testované modely by mohly být teoreticky použitelné, a to v různých oblastech modelování stavu a vývoje lesa. Cílem této práce je na základě vědeckých poznatků jiných autorů (z dostupných literárních zdrojů) a především na základě výsledků vlastního výzkumu prezentovaného v této práci (případové studie), potvrdit uplatnitelnost čtyř zvolených typů regresních modelů v oblasti dendrometrie, a to buď na lokální, nebo globální úrovni. Při splnění určitých podmínek by vybrané modely mohly také sloužit k regionalizaci zvoleného globálního modelu pomocí jeho kalibrace. Konkrétně se jedná o zobecněné lineární modely, lineární modely se smíšenými efekty, nelineární modely se smíšenými efekty a zobecněné aditivní modely. Případové studie byly realizovány buď nad datovými sadami získanými na Školním lesním podniku Masarykův les Křtiny (sedm případových studií), nebo nad daty sbíranými napříč celým územím ČR jakožto součást Národní inventarizace lesů (dvě případové studie), nebo jiné studie s celostátním rozsahem (jedna případová studie). Případové studie vychází z devíti původních vědeckých prací a z jednoho příspěvku na mezinárodní konferenci. Na základě informací z literární rešerše a výsledků případových studií je možné konstatovat, že testované modely jsou plně uplatnitelné pro modelování širokého spektra dendrometrických veličin popisujících aktuální stav či vývoj jednotlivých stromů nebo lesních porostů. Použitelnost modelů byla potvrzena na lokální i globální úrovni včetně možnosti regionalizace modelu skrze jeho kalibraci.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the application of generalized and mixed regression models in forest mensuration. All tested models could be theoretically applicable in different areas of forest tree and stand modelling. The aim of this thesis is, based on the knowledge and results of studies of other authors (from literature review) and especially on the results of author´s own research presented in this thesis (case studies), to confirm the applicability of four selected types of regression models in forest mensuration, either local or global level. Under certain conditions, the selected models could be also used to regionalize the chosen global model through its calibration. Specifically, generalized linear models, linear models with mixed effects, nonlinear models with mixed effects and generalized additive models are tested. The case studies were carried out either on datasets obtained at Training Forest Enterprise Masaryk´s Forest Křtiny (seven case studies) or on datasets collected across the whole Czech Republic as part of the National Forest Inventory (two case studies) or other nationwide studies (one case study). Nine of case studies were based on original scientific papers and one study was written according to article in proceedings from international conference. Based on information from the literature review and mainly from the results of own case studies, it can be stated that the tested models are fully applicable for modelling of wide range of tree or stand variables describing the actual state or future development of individual trees or forest stands. The applicability of the models was confirmed at the local and global level too, including the possibility of regionalization of global model through its calibration.
