How did attitudes towards immigrants change among the Czech majority population

Abstract:

Expanzivní charakter imigrace do ČR lze očekávat i do budoucna. Spolu se zlepšováním ekonomické situace, narůstajícími konflikty, které nyní zasahují i Evropu a stárnutím populace je tedy potřeba se s ní dlouhodoběji vypořádat. Jak česká společnost tuto situaci zvládá nyní? Na základě provedené sekundární analýzy dat výzkumu European Social Survey a Naše společnost můžeme tvrdit, že postoj k cizincům je spíše netolerantní a částečně brání zvládnutí integrace cizinců. Existují zde však i výjimky v podobě pragmatického schvalování zaměstnávání cizinců a tolerantnějšího hodnocení, které je spojeno s osobní zkušeností s imigranty. Lze navíc říci, že současná mladší generace představuje nadějnější vyhlídky spočívající ve vyšší úrovni tolerance i ve větším potenciálu změny postojů. Přestože se současně přikláníme k asimilaci a preferujeme homogenitu, nejde o neměnné charakteristiky. Uvědomování si potřebnosti cizinců v ekonomickém kontextu ukazuje směr, kterým se tato změna může ubírat. Byla odhalena také možnost existence předsudků, což celou situaci dále komplikuje. Stojíme tak před otázkou, zda je současný stav našich postojů nadále udržitelný a žádoucí.

Abstract:

The expansive character of immigration into the Czech republic is most likely to be growing in the future. There is a need to deal with immigration in the long term along with improving economic situation, increasing number of conflicts and aging of the population. How does Czech society cope with this situation? Based on the secondary analysis of the European Social Survey and Our Society data, foreigners are generally perceived in a rather intolerant way. This attitude partly prevents the integration of immigrants. There are exceptions too – an approval of employment of foreigners based on pragmatism or more tolerant attitudes associated with personal experience. Moreover the current young generation, who holds more tolerant and changeable positions, represents a more hopeful prospect. Even though the Czech society prefers assimilation and homogenity, the characteristics might not be immutable. The potential change in the attitude is illustrated by the pragmatic point of view. It was revealed, there is a possible existence of prejudice, which further complicates the whole situation. We are thus facing the question whether the current state of our attitudes remains sustainable and desirable.
