Abstract:

Tato studie zkoumá, jak státní investiční fondy (SIF) přijímají investiční rozhodnutí do veřejných akciových podílů na základě environmentální, sociální a správní výkonnosti (ESG) společností, do kterých investují. Předmětem analýzy je 11 SIF s největším finančním vlivem na akciové trhy. SIF, které jsou předmětem této studie, společně spravují 62 % celkových aktiv spravovaných všemi SIF po celém světě. Výzkum zkoumá investiční strategie uplatňované SIF v letech 2007 až 2023. Pro provedení této studie byl sestaven soubor dat, který zahrnuje kontrolní proměnné ESG získané jak z informací poskytnutých samotnými respondenty (hodnocení ESG od společnosti LSEG/Refinitiv), tak z externích hodnocení firem (indikátor reputačního rizika od společnosti RepRisk). Jedním z pozoruhodných aspektů tohoto výzkumu je zahrnutí kontrolní proměnné, která měří společenskou nezodpovědnost firem (CSI) v cílových společnostech s využitím hodnocení třetích stran. Tento přístup se liší od studií, které se doposud spoléhaly pouze na skóre ESG, které vychází ze subjektivních informací hodnocených firem. Po rozdělení SIF do dvou kontrolních skupin s vyšším a nižším hodnocením ESG jsou prováděny regresní analýzy se zaměřením na investiční chování SIF během období globální finanční krize až do pandemie COVID-19. Výsledky naznačují převládající trend mezi SIF zohledňovat při rozhodováních o investicích postupy ESG svých portfoliových společností, a to především s využitím údajů ESG CSR, které vychází z údajů reportovaných samotnými společnostmi, ale také z údajů nezávislých třetích stran ESG CSI. Údaje CSI o firmách s veřejně obchodovatelnými akciemi, mají výraznější vliv na investiční rozhodnutí SIF v zemích s vyšší transparentností udržitelnosti. Vliv údajů o veřejném držení akcií CSI na investiční rozhodování SWF je nejvyšší během období pandemie COVID-19. Studie zdůrazňuje nutnost větší integrace ESG do investičních strategií SIF, aby se prokázal závazek k udržitelným investičním postupům. Tento výzkum osvětluje cestu k odpovědnějšímu a udržitelnějšímu přístupu k SIF na globálních finančních trzích.

Abstract:

This study explores how Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) make investment decisions in public equity holdings based on the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance of the companies they invest in. The analysis is focused on eleven SWFs with the most financial influence on equity markets. SWFs in the scope of the study collectively manage 62% of total assets managed by SWFs globally. The research investigates the investment strategies employed by SWFs from 2007 to 2023. To conduct this study, a dataset has been compiled that includes ESG control variables obtained from both self-reported information (ESG rating from LSEG database/Refinitiv) and external evaluations of firms (Reputational Risk Indicator from RepRisk). One notable aspect of this research is the inclusion of a control variable that measures corporate social irresponsibility (CSI) in target companies utilizing third-party assessments. This approach differs from studies that relied solely on self-reported ESG scores. After dividing the sample SWFs into two control groups with higher and lower own ESG scores, logit regression analyses are run, especially looking at the investment behavior during the time of the global financial crisis until the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings indicate a prevailing trend among SWFs to consider the ESG practices of their portfolio companies when making investment decisions, using primarily ESG CSR data that is company-self-reported but also independent third-party ESG CSI data. Public equity holding CSI data has a more pronounced influence on the investment decisions of SWFs in countries with higher sustainability transparency. The influence of public equity holding CSI data on the investment decisions of SWFs is highest during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study underscores the necessity for greater ESG integration into SWFs' investment strategies to demonstrate a commitment to sustainable investing practices. This research illuminates the path toward a more responsible and sustainable approach for SWFs in global financial markets.
