Text analysis, translation and commentary: professional texts

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a translation of a specialized text along with a commentary discussing the difficult moves during the process of translation. The source text for this thesis is an academic book review from the area of philosophy called Shame and Philosophy by Richard Paul Hamilton. The first two subchapters briefly explain the problematics of a genre of an academic book review as well as the features of the publicistic and professional style. This part is followed by a complex textual analysis based on Christiane Nord's framework, which is described in her work Text Analysis in Translation. The translation has been completed following a prospective approach specified in Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Functionalist Approaches Explained by C. Nord. The commentary deals with the issues which occurred during the process of translation and comments on the solutions to them in terms of lexical, grammatical and textual equivalence. The analysis has yielded information neccesary for the process of translation and confirmed that the source text shows features of an academic book review as well as of both the publicistic and professional style. The process of translation has shown that in professional texts, there are difficulties with translating specialized terms, certain collocations, adjectives, complex sentences or with choosing an appropriate equivalent.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je předložit návrh překladu odborného textu spolu s komentářem diskutujícím problémy, které se vyskytly během procesu překládání. Jako výchozí text pro tuto práci byla zvolena odborná knižní recenze z oblasti filozofie nazvaná Shame and Philosophy autora Richarda Paula Hamiltona. První dvě podkapitoly stručně objasňují problematiku jak žánru odborné knižní recenze, tak znaky publicistického a odborného stylu. Následuje komplexní textová analýza zpracovaná podle rámce Christiane Nordové, který je specifikován v její práci Text Analysis in Translation. Překlad byl zhotoven v duchu funkčního přístupu, vysvětleného v Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Functionalist Approaches Explained od Ch. Nordové. Komentář se v rámci lexikální, gramatické a textové ekvivalence zabývá problémy, které se vyskytly během procesu překladu, a vysvětluje jejich řešení. Analýza poskytla nezbytné informace pro samotný proces překladu a také potvrdila, že text vykazuje známky odborné knižní recenze stejně jako známky publicistického i odborného stylu. Proces překladu ukázal, že v odborných textech mohou nastat problémy při překladu odborných termínů, určitých kolokací, přídavných jmen a souvětí, či při volení správného ekvivalentu.
