Motivation and experience of members of the student parliament

Abstract:

Cílem výzkumu bylo zjištění motivace studentů pro působení v žákovském parlamentu a odhalení přínosů žákovského parlamentu, které jeho členové reflektují. Pro výzkum byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkumný přístup, data byla sbírána pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a následně analyzována pomocí otevřeného kódování. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo pět studentů třetího nebo čtvrtého ročníku čtyřletého gymnázia a jedna studentka osmého ročníku víceletého gymnázia. Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že za vstupem do parlamentu často stojí vnější motivace, dále že se původní motivace může s časem změnit, přičemž v této změně má určitý podíl také to, zda je parlament funkční, či nikoli. Zároveň se zdá, že s funkčním parlamentem se u jeho členů rozvíjí pocit odpovědnosti vůči parlamentu, který je nutí v něm setrvávat. Ukázalo se také, že se angažovaným studentům mění jejich role na škole. Výsledky dále ukázaly, že to, zda parlament rozvíjí komunikační dovednosti studentů není zcela jednoznačné, a podobně je tomu také v případě občanské angažovanosti, u níž parlament, jak se zdá, podporuje jen určitou část. Posledním zjištěním této práce bylo, že ačkoli má žákovský parlament mnohé pravomoci, konečné slovo má přesto v některých případech vedení školy.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to find out motivation of members of the student parliament and reveal benefits of student parliament, which its members reflect. Qualitative research was chosen for this study, data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by the open coding. The research sample consisted of five students of third or fourth grade of four-year grammar school programme and one eight grader of eight-year grammar school programme. The results has shown that external motivation is often the reason of joining the student parliament and that the original motivation may change over time, whereas this change is linked to the functionality of the parliament. It also seems that well performing parliament develops a sense of responsibility among its members, which compels them to remain in parliament. The study shows that the role of engaged students develops in time. The results are unclear about whether the parliament membership develops students' communication skills and these results are similar in the field of civic engagement, where the parliament membership seems to foster only a certain areas. The last finding of this study is that although the student parliament has many competences it is still dependent on decisions made by the school management.
