Communication in a multidisciplinary team and the role of a physiotherapist in it

Abstract:

Úvod: Pro vypracování diplomové práce bylo zvoleno téma komunikace v multidisciplinárním týmu a role fyzioterapeuta v něm. Záměrem zpracování literární rešerše a analýzy dat výzkumného šetření bylo blíže se seznámit s problematikou komunikace v multioborových týmech a vypracovat doporučení pro praxi, jejímž prostřednictvím by mělo docházet ke zlepšení průběhu vzájemné spolupráce. Cíl práce: Cílem práce je zjistit, jak probíhá komunikace ve zdravotnických multidisciplinárních týmech, jejichž součástí je fyzioterapeut, jaké podněty týmové komunikaci přispívají a jaké zásadní komunikační bariéry se mohou v praxi vyskytovat. Metodika: Pro zpracování dat byla vybrána kvalitativní metoda zprostředkovaná strukturovanými rozhovory se šesti respondenty z řad fyzioterapeutů pracujících v ambulantních a lůžkových zdravotnických zařízení. Výsledky: Výsledky byly interpretovány jako odpovědi na výzkumné otázky. Ze zpracovaného textu rozhovorů vyplynulo, že multidisciplinární tým funguje, pokud jeho členové spolupracují, pravidelně spolu komunikují a sdílejí jednotnou dokumentaci pacienta. Členy týmu jsou často fyzioterapeuti, lékaři, ergoterapeuti, psychologové a všeobecné sestry. Tým má svého vedoucího, obvykle fyzioterapeuta nebo lékaře, který udržuje komunikaci s vyšším vedením. Běžná je komunikace tváří v tvář a také elektronická a telefonická komunikace. Efektivní komunikace probíhá prostřednictvím schůzek, teambuildingů, supervizí, školení a zpětné vazby za podpory vedení. Mezi problémy v komunikaci patří konflikty, nedostatek ochoty komunikovat, chybně vymezené kompetence, a také absence podpory či účasti vedení. Závěr: Na základně zodpovězených výzkumných otázek, se podařilo cíl splnit. Porozumění problematice komunikace v multidisciplinárním týmu, vedlo ke zpracování doporučení pro praxi, a to vytvořením multidisciplinárního týmu náborem pracovníků různých profesí, budováním komunikačních sítí a školením pracovníků v oblasti mezioborové spolupráce, využíváním vhodných komunikačních kanálů pro týmovou komunikaci s ohledem na bezpečnost a dostupnost kontaktů. Předmětem doporučení bylo i určení vedoucího týmu, který bude koordinovat spolupráci, usnadňovat komunikaci a poskytovat zpětnou vazbu, provádět společná setkání, školení, supervize a další aktivity zaměřené na budování týmu a podporu komunikace.

Abstract:

Introduction: The topic selected for this thesis is communication in multidisciplinary teams and the role of physiotherapists within them. The aim of conducting a literature review and analyzing research data was to gain a better understanding of communication issues in multi-disciplinary teams and to develop recommendations for practice to improve collaboration. Objective: This thesis aims to investigate how communication occurs in healthcare multidisciplinary teams, including physiotherapists, what stimuli contribute to team communication, and what significant communication barriers may arise in practice. Methodology: Qualitative data analysis was conducted using structured interviews with six respondents who are physiotherapists working in outpatient and inpatient healthcare facilities. Results: The results were interpreted as responses to the research questions. From the processed text of interviews, it emerged that a multidisciplinary team functions when its members collaborate, communicate regularly, and share unified patient documentation. Team members include physiotherapists, doctors, occupational therapists, psychologists, and general nurses. The team has its leader, usually a physiotherapist or a doctor, who maintains communication with senior management. Face-to-face communication, as well as electronic and phone communication, are common. Effective communication occurs through meetings, team-building activities, supervision, training, and feedback supported by management. Communication problems include conflicts, lack of willingness to communicate, poorly defined competencies, and absence of leadership support or participation. Conclusion: Based on the answered research questions, the goal was achieved. Understanding the issue of communication in a multidisciplinary team led to the development of recommendations for practice, including establishing a multidisciplinary team by recruiting workers from various professions, building communication networks, and training workers in interdisciplinary collaboration, using appropriate communication channels for team communication with regard to safety and contact availability. The recommendations also included appointing a team leader to coordinate collaboration, facilitate communication, provide feedback, conduct joint meetings, training, supervision, and other activities focused on team building and communication support.
