The Political Poster of the 1960's on both Sides of the Iron Curtain

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá politickým plakátem 60. let na obou stranách železné opony. Prozkoumá odlišný stav umělecké tvorby na Východě a Západě, a to historické, politické a společenské podmínky, které vývoj umění ovlivnily. Po stanovení rozdílného kontextu, v němž díla vznikají, práce srovná interpretaci čtyř podstatných námětů doby. Jedná se o témata lidských práv, válečné hrozby, jazyka politické propagandy a sloganů doby, a rok 1968. Závěr práce zhodnotí přínos nezávislého politického plakátu a zdůrazní podobu politických děl Západu a Východu přestože vznikala za odlišných podmínek.

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the political poster of the 1960’s on both sides of the Iron Curtain. It investigates the contrasting state of the arts in the Eastern and Western Bloc. After establishing the (political, historical and social) context in which political posters are created, the paper focuses on four specific themes typical of political art of the time (human rights issues, the threat of world war, the language of politics and phrases of the times and the year 1968 as a time of pivotal social and political change worldwide). In conclusion this paper evaluates the contribution of the independent political poster and lays emphasis on the fact that political posters of the 1960’s were similar in theme on both sides of the Iron Curtain despite the profoundly distinctive conditions under which they were created.
