The Conception of Family in Fairytales by Božena Němcová and Karel Jaromír Erben, and the Employment of Biedermeier and Romanticism in Them

Abstract:

Prostřednictvím pohádkových děl Boženy Němcové a Karla Jaromíra Erbena je zkoumáno pojetí rodiny jako dominantní jistoty příznačné pro biedermeier a synkretismus ostatních -ismů zejména první poloviny 19. století. Nezabýváme se přesným časovým rozdělením etap národního obrození ani problematikou jednotlivých žánrů a jejich různorodostí. Tyto nuance, i když jsou pro pochopení dobové a stylové různorodosti podstatné, nejsou pro tuto práci zásadní. Postačíme si se základním vymezením jak dobovým, tak žánrovým, a to se zřetelem k nejdůležitějším časovým mezníkům a charakteristickým rysům. Základní teoretické pojmové vymezení poslouží ke zkoumání funkčnosti žánrů a jejich stylistického zpracování Boženou Němcovou a Karlem Jaromírem Erbenem. dominantní jistota biedermeieru - zbožnost, bude vztažena k rodině s cílem zjistit, jak s ní korespondují Erbenův mýtus a tematizovaná zbožnost v textu Němcové. Dále se budeme soustředit na to, jakou podobu a funkci mají konkrétní rysy dobového synkretismu. Nakonec bude možné vyvodit odpověď, kde jsou v díle Němcová a Erben stabilní prvky, z čeho pramení jistoty a zda se vztahují pouze k rodině nebo se objevují i mimo ni.

Abstract:

Exploring fairytales by Bozena Nemcova and Karel Jaromir Erben I examine the conception of family as the dominant certainty characteristic of biedermeier and syncretism of other –isms, especially of the first half of the nineteenth century. I do not cover the exact chronological division of the Czech national revival, nor the matter of other individual genres. These nuances, important for the understanding as they are, would be of no concern to this thesis. It is sufficient if we propose the most important time and genre borders with the focus on the most characteristic features of them. This will serve to enable us to examine the texts’ ability to work in the genres’ limits. The other important certainty in biedermeier, religiousness, is related to family in order to find out how Erben’s myth and its thematised concept in texts by Nemcova correspond with it. Next, I will concentrate on what form particular features of syncretism take and what their function is. Finally, it will be feasible to answer the question where the main pillars of Erben’s and Nemcova’s fairytales lie and where they originate from, whether from the family exclusively or from elsewhere, too.
