Diversity of meadow vegetation in the West Carpathians

Abstract:

Louky a pastviny jsou velmi významnou součástí krajiny Západních Karpat a výrazně přispívají k její biodiverzitě. Zároveň v dnešní krajině plní významnou funkci náhradních stanovišť pro ohrožené druhy přirozeného bezlesí a světlých lesů. Protože vznik těchto stanovišť je spojen s činností člověka, jejich setrvání v krajině je podmíněno pravidelným obhospodařováním. Diverzita luční a pastvinné vegetace odráží nejen abiotické faktory prostředí, ale také způsob, intenzitu i historii obhospodařování. Vegetaci luk a pastvin v oblasti tvoří společenstva mezofilních luk a pastvin, suchých širokolistých trávníků, smilkových trávníků, vlhkých luk a lučních pramenišť. Předkládaná disertační práce obsahuje výsledky studia různých aspektů diverzity luční a pastvinné vegetace Západních Karpat, které doposud nebyly objasněny. Na základě souboru snímků z národních fytocenologických databází a dalších publikovaných i nepublikovaných snímků byla provedena jednotná klasifikace vegetace mezofilních luk a pastvin (řád Arrhenatheretalia elatioris) pro celé Západních Karpaty. Klasifikací byla rozlišena většina společenstev známých z oblasti Západních Karpat a naznačena jejich vzájemná podobnost. Ukázalo se, že extenzivní pastviny, řazené do asociace Anthoxantho odorati-Agrostietum tenuis jsou floristicky podobnější mezofilním ovsíkovým loukám svazu Arrhenatherion elatioris než intenzivněji využívaným pastvinám svazu Cynosurion cristati, kam byly tradičně řazeny. V souladu s polským klasifikačním systémem bylo vymezeno společenstvo odpovídající asociaci Gladiolo imbricati-Agrostietum capillaris, které je svým druhovým složením odlišné od mezofilních ovsíkových luk i horských luk pohoří vnitřních Západních Karpat. Těžištěm rozšíření tohoto společenstva jsou podhorské a horské polohy severní části území. V této oblasti naopak téměř chybí vegetace asociace Anthoxantho odorati-Agrostietum tenuis. Výsledky naznačují, že rozdíly v klasifikačních systémech jednotlivých zemí odrážejí diverzitu luční a pastvinné vegetace v oblasti podmíněnou ekologickými faktory. Další studie byla zaměřena na popis diverzity lučních a pastvinných společenstev Západních Karpat z hlediska zastoupení stanovištních specialistů ve vegetaci. Průměrný poměr specialistů se u většiny společenstev lišil od teoretické hodnoty odpovídající náhodnému výskytu specialistů ve studované vegetaci. Společenstva osídlující stanoviště vyskytující se v krajině od raného holocénu, tedy období před zapojením krajiny lesem, mají větší zastoupení specialistů. Ve vnějších Západních Karpatech jsou to širokolisté suché trávníky, ve vnitřních Západních Karpatech vápnitá slatiniště a louky vyšších poloh. Zastoupení specialistů ve vegetaci dále klesá s rostoucí produktivitou stanoviště, málo produktivní vegetace však není nezbytně bohatá na specialisty. Výzkum stanovištních podmínek rostlin pomocí obsahu prvků a živinové stoichiometrie v biomase, provedený na lučních prameništích vnějších Západních Karpat, vedl k objasnění příčin diverzity vegetace podél hlavních vegetačních gradientů. Gradient od kyselých přechodových rašelinišť k pěnovcovým prameništím je podmíněn fyzikálně-chemickými vlastnostmi podzemní vody, které se projevily různou přístupností vápníku a železa rostlinám. Přístupnost živin rostlinám je v prameništních slatiništích nízká, vegetace pěnovcových pramenišť je limitována extrémně nízkou přístupností fosforu. Abstract:

Hay meadows and pastures are widespread habitats in the West Carpathians. Located in the Central European temperate zone, they play an important role for biodiversity conservation, performing as refuges for threatened non-forest species. Because origin of these habitats is connected with human activities, their existence has been conditioned by traditional management and their diversity mirrors not only edaphic and climatic conditions but also historical and present management. The vegetation involves communities of mesic meadows and pastures, semi-dry grasslands, grasslands with Nardus stricta, wet meadows and meadow spring fens. The presented thesis focuses on different aspects of diversity of the meadow and pasture vegetation in the West Carpathians that have not been studied so far. On the basis of large data sets of vegetation plots (relevés) from national phytosociological databases and published as well as unpublished relevés, a phytosociological study of mesic hay meadows and pastures (order Arrhenatheretalia elatioris) was performed for the entire area of the West Carpathians. The classification reflected the most of vegetation types of mesic meadows and pastures previously recorded in the area and indicated their similarity. The analysis showed, for example, that vegetation of extensive pastures, corresponding to the association Anthoxantho odorati-Agrostietum tenuis, is more similar in floristic composition to the mesic meadows of Arrhenatherion elatioris than to the intensive pastures of Cynosurion cristati where it has been traditionally classified. In agreement with the Polish classification system, a community corresponding to the association Gladiolo imbricati-Agrostietum capillaris was distinguished, differentiating in species composition from the mesic meadows as well as the montane Inner Carpathian meadows. The community is distributed predominantly in submontane and montane zone of the northern part of the West Carpathians, whereas the extensive pastures of Anthoxantho odorati-Agrostietum tenuis are virtually missing in that area. The results indicate that the differences in the classification systems used in particular countries largely reflect the vegetation diversity of mesic meadows and pastures in the area, caused by environmental conditions. In the next study, diversity of the West Carpathian semi-natural grassland vegetation was described by means of representation of habitat specialists. For most of the communities, mean proportion of specialists differed from theoretical value which corresponded to random distribution of specialists in the vegetation. Generally, the habitats that have occurred in the region since the early Postglacial are rich in habitat specialists. This pattern was pronounced in semi-dry grasslands in the Outer West Carpathians and in calcareous fens and higher-altitude meadows in the Inner West Carpathians. Across all vegetation plots, the proportion of specialists decreases with increasing site productivity. However, low-productive communities have not necessarily high proportion of specialists. Factors underlying vegetation diversity along the main vegetation gradients in the Outer West Carpathian meadow spring fens were also examined, using nutrient content and stoichiometry in plant biomass. The gradient from poor Sphagnum fens to calcareous fens with tufa formation (the poor-rich vegetation gradient) is controlled by physical-chemical properties of the springwater, which were best explained by varying availability of calcium and iron to plants. Nutrient availability to plants in spring fens is generally low, the vegetation of tufa-forming fens is limited by extremely low phosphorus availability. Along the vegetation gradient from spring fens to wet meadows the nutrient availability increases, which facilitates increasing occurrence of nutrient-demanding broad-leaved herbs.
