Status of Taiwan at the turn of 19th and the beginning of 20th century

Abstract:

Otázka Tchaj-wanu je po desetiletí jedním z nejcitlivějších problémů jihovýchodní Asie. Bakalářská práce se v první části zabývá odlišnými vývoji pevninské Číny a ostrova Tchaj-wan do a během přelomu 19. a 20. století. Ve druhé části se práce zabývá vývojem Číny, jakožto to chátrajícího impéria a poté nestabilní, vojevůdci kontrolované Čínské republiky a jejími etapami, začínající etapou Pej-jangské vlády a končící severní expedicí a ustanovením mezinárodně uznávané Čínské republiky, až do doby druhé čínsko-japonské války. Na druhé straně se zabývá vývojem Tchaj-wanu, jakožto ideální Japonské kolonie. Značná pozornost je věnovaná ekonomickému, sociálnímu i kulturnímu vývoji během Japonské nadvlády. Ve třetí části se bakalářská práce stručně zabývá druhou čínsko-japonskou válku, jejímu průběhu na pevninské Číně, postavení Tchaj-wanu během ní a nakonec i jejími výsledky. Poté se práce zabývá vyvrcholením občanské války, která končí vítězstvím Čínské Komunistické strany, prohrou Kuomintangu a jeho následného ústupu na ostrov Tchaj-wan. Značná pozornost je věnovaná kontroverzním aktivitám Kuomintangu na ostrově Tchaj-wan, zejména „Incidentu 228“ a bílému teroru. V poslední části se práce stručně zaměřuje na poválečný vývoj ostrova, jeho počáteční politické uspořádání a následný ekonomický rozmach, který z něj učinil ekonomickou velmoc.

Abstract:

The Taiwan issue has been one of Southeast Asia's most sensitive issues for decades. In the first part, the bachelor's thesis deals with the different development of mainland China and the island of Taiwan up to and during the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the second part, the work deals with the development of China as a decaying empire and the unstable, warlord-controlled Republic of China and its stages, beginning with the stage of the Beiyang government and ending with the northern expedition and the establishment of the internationally recognized Republic of China, up to the time of the Second Sino-Japanese War. On the other hand, it deals with the development of Taiwan, as an ideal Japanese colony. Considerable attention is paid to the economic, social and cultural development during the Japanese rule. In the third part, the bachelor's thesis briefly deals with the Second Sino-Japanese War, its progress on mainland China, the position of Taiwan during it and finally its results. Then the work deals with the climax of the civil war, which ends with the victory of the Chinese Communist Party, the defeat of the Kuomintang and its subsequent retreat to the island of Taiwan. Considerable attention is paid to the Kuomintang's controversial activities on the island of Taiwan, particularly the "228 Incident" and the White Terror. In the last part, the work briefly focuses on the post-war development of the island, its initial political organization and the subsequent economic boom that made it a great economic power.
