Weak central coherence theory and faces recognition characteristics in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: an eye tracking quasi-experiment

Abstract:

The primary goal of this study was to compare visual perception strategies between autistic and typically developed children. The research is based on the theory of weak central coherence and its modifications, whereby it aims to test deficits in global processing and context understanding in autistic children. Besides it examines visual strategies in autistic children by an eye tracking device while viewing social stimuli (faces) in two types of tasks: free observation and multiple choice tasks with two possible answers and only one correct. There were no significant differences found in the performance in tasks linked with context understanding between experimental group composed of 12 autistic children and control group composed of 9 typically developed children. The results may suggest that autistic children do not experience deficits in global processing in tasks, where the global processing is desirable. The eye tracking data analysis showed that the between groups differences in visual strategies does exist in free observation: typically developed children focused on information rich areas of the picture (head and object), while autistic children preferred the body area. In multiple choice tasks there were no differences found between groups. This may suggest that although autistic children choose different areas to gaze at in free visual perception, they may be able to be flexible and disregard these preferences for solving the task.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá vizuálnym vnímaním u detí s poruchou autistického spektra v porovnaní s komparačnou skupinou detí bez autizmu. Výskum vychádza z teórie slabej centrálnej koherencie a jej modifikácií, pričom si kladie za cieľ preskúmať deficity v globálnom spracovávaní vnemov a chápanie kontextu u detí s autizmom. Okrem toho mapuje vizuálne stratégie u detí s autizmom pomocou eye trackingového zariadenia pri pozorovaní sociálnych podnetov (tvárí) a to v dvoch typoch úloh: pri spontánnom pozorovaní a pri úlohách s núteným výberom z možností. Vo vzorke 12 detí s autizmom a 9 detí bez autizmu sa nepotvrdili žiadne signifikantné rozdiely v úspešnosti riešenia úloh spojených s pochopením kontextu, čo môže naznačovať, že deti s autizmom nezažívajú výrazné deficity v globálnom spracovávaní v úlohách, kde je globálne spracovávanie žiadúce. Analýza eye trackingových dát ukázala, že pri spontánnom pozorovaní sa vizuálne vzorce medzi skupinami líšia: zatiaľ čo deti bez autizmu sa sústredili na informačne bohaté oblasti obrázku (hlava a objekt), deti s autizmom preferovali oblasť postavy. V úlohách s núteným výberom sa žiadne rozdiely medzi skupinami nepotvrdili. Výsledky môžu naznačovať, že i keď deti s autizmom pri vizuálnom vnímaní preferujú iné oblasti, pre vyriešenie stanovenej úlohy dokážu tieto preferencie upozadiť a flexibilne sa prispôsobiť zadaniu.
