Translation of proper names in Terry Pratchett's books: a study of the strategies used in the Czech and Spanish translations

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problems of the translation of proper names. It aims to analyse the translation strategies of the proper names that appear in the selected volumes of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. Namely, it focuses on the Czech and Spanish translation of the given fantasy saga. The first part of the thesis concerns with the specificity of literary translation and with the translation of fantasy literature in particular. It focuses on the conception of the translation as an act of communication and it defines the concept of proper name. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the identification and comparison of the translation techniques used by the Czech and the Spanish translator in order to transfer the proper names. Furthermore, it analyses the translation solutions with respect to whether they reflect the original intention of the author.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou vlastních jmen v literárním překladu. Na vybraných dílech Terryho Pratchetta z fantasy série Zeměplocha sleduje strategii překladu vlastních jmen do češtiny a španělštiny. V teoretické části práce rozebírá specifika literárního překladu s přihlédnutím k překladu vlastních jmen, zaměřuje se na pojetí překladu jako komunikačního aktu a zohledňuje rovněž problematiku překladu fantasy literatury. V praktické části pak diplomová práce analyzuje a srovnává postupy, které při překladu vlastních jmen zvolili jednotliví překladatelé, a zhodnocuje překladatelská řešení s ohledem na to, zda reflektují původní záměr autora.
