Abuse risks of public Wi-Fi networks

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zneužitelností veřejných Wi-Fi sítí k útokům vůči běžnému uživateli. Cílem práce je posoudit, jaká rizika vyplývají z využití veřejných Wi-Fi sítí a navrhnout způsoby, jak takovým rizikům předejít. V úvodních teoretických kapitolách jsou popsány principy provozu Wi-Fi a jejich architektura, dále jsou definovány dle standardu a používaných technologií. Práce se dále stručně zabývá šifrováním autentizace uživatelů a legislativním rámcem v ČR. Poslední teoretickou částí je popis možných útoků, s kterými se lze běžně setkat v praxi. Praktická část práce v laboratorním prostředí simuluje reálné útoky, popisuje jejich následky a způsoby ochrany proti těmto útokům. Poslední částí práce je praktický projekt webové prezentace, který na základě získaných závěrů doporučuje laické veřejnosti uvědomovat si riziko využívání veřejných Wi-Fi sítí a jak se možným rizikům bránit.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis looks into exploitability of public Wi-Fi networks attacks against a common user. The objective of the thesis is to evaluate which risks result from using public Wi-Fi networks and to propose ways how to prevent such risks. The principles of Wi-Fi networks and its architecture are described in the opening theoretical chapters, furthermore defined by their standard and used technologies. This thesis then briefly deals with the user's authentication encryption and legislative framework in the Czech Republic. The last theoretical part is a description of possible attacks which can be encountered in practice. The practical part of the thesis in a laboratory environment simulates real attacks, describes their consequences and ways to protect against these attacks. The last part of the thesis is a practical project of web presentation, which suggests the general public to be aware of the risks when using public Wi-Fi networks and how to prevent those risks based on the obtained conclusions.
