The role of personality in the severity of cybersickness: A regression model conceptualized according to the BigFive in the Czech population

Abstract:

Cybersickness je fenomén, který trápí stále řadu uživatelů virtuální reality a omezuje využití jejího plného potenciálu. Tato práce se zabývala otázkou, zda by mohla osobnost konceptualizovaná jako Big Five ovlivňovat míru závažnosti symptomů cybersickness. Vyšetřili jsme 61 osob, u nichž jsme měřili cybersickness prostřednictvím dotazníku Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (pretest a posttest), zjistili jsme jejich srdeční tep před expozicí VR a při ní a na závěr jsme administrovali osobnostní inventář NEO-FFI. Výsledný lineární regresní model s osobnostními rysy jako prediktory a cybersickness jako predikovanou proměnnou nevyšel statisticky významný, leč byly pozorovatelné určité signifikantní trendy, konkrétně neuroticismus vykazoval souvislost se symptomy pojícími se s únavou. Ve výzkumném souboru se též ukázalo, že si ženy více než muži stěžovaly na cybersickness, konkrétně na nevolnost, přičemž v datech se objevil náznak možné role neuroticismu při sledování vlivu pohlaví na cybersickness. Měření srdečního tepu vykazovalo vztah především se škálou nevolnosti v dotazníku SSQ, čímž naznačuje svůj potenciální užitek při studiu fenoménu cybersickness. Práce tak přináší nový vhled do zkoumané problematiky a svými daty pomáhá k pozvolnému vyjasňování vztahu osobnosti a cybersickness.

Abstract:

Cybersickness is a phenomenon, which is causing some difficulties for some users of virtual reality and therefore a limitation of its full potential. This work has focused on the question, whether personality conceptualized according to Big Five can affect the severity of cybersickness. We have examined 61 participants for cybersickness with Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (pretest and posttest), heart rate before and during the VR exposition and personality traits with NEO-FFI. The linear regression model with personality traits as predictors and cybersickness score as predicted variable was not statistically significant, even though we could observe, that neuroticism itself has shown a possible relation to the symptoms of fatigue. Nevertheless, in our sample was found, that female participants complained about cybersickness more than males, specifically in the scale of nausea. We also found in our data a possible role of the trait neuroticism in the relation between cybersickness and sex. The measurement of the heart rate correlated with the nausea scale of SSQ, which makes heart rate a useful measurement in the cybersickness research. With that, this work offers a new insight into the problematics of cybersickness and its data help with the gradual clarification of the relation between cybersickness and personality.
