Discussion of EU and European integration - Reasoning of ODS

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou argumentace Občanské demokratické strany v rámci témat Evropské unie a evropské integrace. Metodou výzkumu je v této práci analýza metafor, která má svůj původ v teorii metafor George Lakoffa a Marka Johnsona. Pomocí této metody je tak zjišťováno využití metaforických výrazů v projevech představitelů ODS týkajících se EU a její integrace a tím také rámování argumentace v rámci těchto projevů. Práce je členěna na dvě hlavní části. První, teoretická část se zabývá využitím jazyka v politice, teorií rámování a teorií metafor, přičemž úmyslem je ukázat vhodnost analýzy metafor ke zkoumání rámců. V klíčové druhé části pak přichází na řadu samotná analýza projevů představitelů ODS, jsou hledány konkrétní metaforické výrazy, které jsou následně dále interpretovány. V závěru pak přichází na řadu shrnutí nalezených výsledků a proměn v argumentaci ve zkoumaném období.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is to analyze an argumentation of one of czech political parties, the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) within the frame of European Union and European integration subjects. The research is based on the method of metaphor analysis which results from George Lakoff’s and Mark Johnson’s theory of metaphor. This method is used to detect the usage of methaphorical expressions in the pronouncements of party leaders, which are connected with European Union’s and European integration and thereby also framing of their argumentation. The thesis consists of two main parts – the theoretical part deals with usage of language in politics, framing theory and theory of metaphor. The aim of this part is to show, that metaphor analysis is suitable for framing research. In the crucial second part the thesis deals with the very analysis of pronouncements of party leaders, which involves searching for particular metaphorical expressions, their categorization according to their source domain and further interpretation. In conclusion there is a summary of found results and changes throughout chosen time interval.
