Media representation of US presidential election 2016 in “Lidové noviny“ and “Právo”. Comparative content analysis

Abstract:

Tato výzkumná práce se zabývá kvantitativní obsahovou analýzou mediální reprezentace prezidentských voleb v USA v roce 2016, konkrétně kandidátů Donalda Trumpa a Hillary Clintonové. Výzkum přináší komparaci zobrazování prezidentské volby v USA v Lidových novinách a deníku Právo. Teoretická část nastiňuje koncepty a teorie spojené s mediální reprezentací událostí. Práce přináší přehled dřívějších výzkumů a analýz na téma prezidentských voleb reprezentovaných jak v českých médiích, tak v USA. Metodologická část pak opisuje postup obsahové analýzy. Následně práce shrnuje výsledky, komentuje je a uvádí do souvislostí. Výsledky ukázaly, že oba deníky postupovaly při mediální reprezentaci podobně, s rozdíly jako je vyšší připisovaná důležitost zkoumané události v Lidových novinách, nebo také větší zaměření deníku Právo na aféru kandidátky Clintonové při reprezentaci dílčích témat. Pro oba deníky pak byla zjištěna klíčová role kandidátů, a to především jejich konflikty a záporné vlastnosti, kterými udržovaly oba deníky atraktivitu této události.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is the quantitative content analysis of media representation of the presidential election in US in 2016, the media representation of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. This research brings a comparison of media representation of presidential election in US in Lidové noviny and Právo. The theoretical part explains concepts and theories connected with media representation of events. In addition, it provides an overview of previous research and analysis of media representation of presidential elections, both in The Czech media and media in the US. The methodological part describes the process of content analysis. Subsequently, the work summarizes the results, comments them and puts them in the context. The results showed the similar representation of both daily newspapers with differences such as the higher assigned importance of this event in Lidové noviny or also the higher focus on partial topic - the affinity of candidate Clinton in Právo. The role of the candidates was crucial, especially the representation of their conflicts and negative characteristics, that both daily newspapers have used to kept this event attractive for Czech readers.
