Body image, self-esteem and self-efficacy in the population of women in the ages of adolescence and adulthood

Abstract:

The sick with eating disorders represent a substantially heterogeneous group of patients with very diverse problems. Not by accident we consider them as some of the most bewildering and hardest to grasp psychiatric diagnosis. The aim of this thesis is to contribute toward the broadening of knowledge in the area of three and, from the viewpoint of the eating disorders, the most important components of the self-system: self-esteem, self-efficacy, and body image. We are focusing the research exclusively on the female population. Based on previous research and theoretical principles, we are attempting to map the overall attitude of girls and young women with eating disorders toward their own body and themselves in terms of awareness of their own abilities and worth. At the same time we are interested in perception and the experiencing of a satisfaction with ones own body, self-esteem, and the self-efficacy in the normal population. This work is conceived as a quantitative research based on the technique of three questionnaires: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, and Questionnaire of satisfaction with ones own body. Results point toward similar characteristic marks, but also differences in the perception of self-appearance in eating disorders and the normal population. A significant difference was noted in experiencing an overall satisfaction with ones own body and in degree of the sense of self-efficacy. A suprising finding were the results in the area of self-esteem, which indicate a statistically insignificant difference between eating disorders and the normal population. The results should help to indintify the different aspects of the physical self-perception schemes and their relevance to the overal subjective experiencing of self-esteem and self-efficacy.

Abstract:

Nemocní s poruchami príjmu potravy predstavujú pomerne dosť heterogénnu skupinu pacientov s veľmi rôznorodými problémami. Nie náhodou ich považujeme za jedny z najzáhadnejších a najhoršie uchopiteľných psychiatrických diagnóz. Cieľom diplomovej práce je prispieť k rozšíreniu poznatkov v oblasti troch, z hľadiska porúch príjmu potravy, najdôležitejších zložiek sebasystému: sebaúcty, self-efficacy a telesného sebapoňatia. Výskum zameriavame výhradne na ženskú populáciu. Vychádzajúc z predchádzajúcich výskumov a teoretických zakotvení, sa snažíme zmapovať celkový postoj dievčat a mladých žien s poruchami príjmu potravy k vlastnému telu a k sebe samým z hľadiska uvedomovania si vlastných schopností a vlastnej ceny. Súčasne nás zaujíma, ako je to s vnímaním a prežívaním spokojnosti s vlastným telom, úcty k sebe a vedomím vlastnej účinnosti u normálnej bežnej populácie. Práca je koncipovaná ako kvantitatívny výskum založený na technike troch dotazníkov: Rosenbergovej škály sebahodnotenia, Dotazníku všeobecnej vlastnej efektivity a Dotazníku spokojnosti s vlastným telom. Výsledky poukázali na podobné charakteristické znaky, ale i odlišnosti vo vnímaní vlastného vzhľadu u porúch príjmu potravy a bežnej populácie. Významný rozdiel bol zaznamenaný v prežívaní celkovej spokojnosti so svojim vlastným telom a v miere vedomia vlastnej účinnosti. Prekvapujúcim zistením boli výsledky v oblasti sebaúcty, ktoré poukazujú na štatisticky nevýznamný rozdiel medzi poruchami príjmu potravy a bežnou populáciou. Výsledky by mali pomôcť identifikovať rôzne aspekty sebapercepcie telesnej schémy a ich súvislosti s celkovým subjektívnym prežívaním sebaúcty a vlastnej účinnosti.
