The Role of Soft Power in Chinese Policy towards Taiwan

Abstract:

Námětem práce je problematika vztahů Číny a Taiwanu, jež je zkoumána z perspektivy soft power. V minulosti se Čína pokoušela o dosažení sjednocení za pomoci nástrojů hard power. Postupně však začala svůj postoj měnit a zahrnovat do svého přístupu i prvky soft power. Cílem práce je na základě teorie soft power, představené Josephem Nyem v roce 1990, identifikovat a demonstrovat prvky této složky moci v čínské politice vůči Taiwanu, míru jejich zastoupení v celkové politice vůči Taiwanu a to, jakým způsobem přispívají k cílům Číny v této oblasti, tj. k zabránění vyhlášení nezávislosti Taiwanu a dosažení unifikace.

Abstract:

The central topic of the thesis are the cross-Taiwan strait relations that are examined from the soft power perspective. In the past, China was using mainly hard power strategies in order to achieve unification. Gradually she has been changing her approach and she has been incorporating soft power strategies. The aim of the text is to identify and demonstrate the elements of this segment of power in the Chinese policy towards Taiwan, the degree to which is soft power present in the overall China Taiwan policy, how these strategies help to prevent Taiwanese independence and contribute to the achievement of the goal of unification.
