Narrative analysis of the personal accounts of women and girls with the eating disorder

Abstract:

Předložená magisterská práce se zabývá otázkou konstrukce významu onemocnění u dívek a žen s poruchou příjmu potravy. K zodpovězení výzkumné otázky: Jakým způsobem popisují a prožívají svůj život s chorobou ženy a dívky s poruchou příjmu potravy? byla zvolena narativní výzkumná strategie. K analýze byly použity osobní výpovědi osmi žen a dívek s různými variacemi poruch příjmu potravy. Příběhy pacientek s poruchou příjmu potravy reflektují témata, která odpovídají typu jejich onemocnění a závažnosti aktuálního zdravotního stavu. Z hlediska formální podoby vyprávění jsem se zaměřila na míru koherence a autentičnosti příběhů. V rámci obsahové analýzy jsem se zaměřila primárně na dynamiku vývoje sebe-pojetí, vztahu s sobě a ostatním, hodnot ve vztahu k nemoci pomocí techniky narativní rekonstrukce. Významný prostor byl dán také mapování individuálních „významů“ nemoci, jak si ženy a dívky vytvářely prostřednictvím svých vyprávění. Zjištění analýzy potvrzují do velké míry výsledky předchozích výzkumů. Výrazněji se však objevuje problematika ambivalence vztahu k onemocnění a vliv významných druhých na léčení choroby.

Abstract:

The construction of the meaning of the illness for girls and women with eating disorders is the subject of the master’s thesis presented. To answer the research questions: How do describe and experience the life with the illness women and girls with eating disorders? the narrative research strategy was chosen. In the analysis I used the personal testimonies of eight women and girls with different variations of eating disorders. Stories of patients with eating disorders reflect themes that correspond to the type and severity of their current medical situation. In terms of formal narrative form, I focused on the degree of coherency and authenticity in the stories. In the context of content analysis, I focused primarily on the dynamics of the development of self-concept, relationships with themselves and others, the values in relation to the disease using techniques of narrative reconstruction. Significant space has been given to the mapping of individual "meanings" of illness as it has developed trough their narratives. The findings confirmed to the large extend results of the previous studies. However, feelings of ambivalence related to the disease and the influence of the significant others shown greater significance for the treatment of disease.
