Biblical stories in the Eduard Petiška's adaptation

Abstract:

Předložená disertační práce se zaměřuje na problematiku adaptace biblické látky pro děti a mládež. Ve středu jejího zájmu stojí dílo Eduarda Petišky Příběhy, na které svítilo slunce (1967), konkrétně jeho třetí oddíl Báje a pověsti starého Izraele. Petiška chápe biblické příběhy jako součást starověkého písemnictví, významné mýty, nikoliv jako náboženské texty. Neuvádí proto starozákonní příběhy jako samostatné dílo, nýbrž v rámci souboru v konfrontaci tradovaných dějů tří významných civilizací – Egypta, Mezopotámie a Izraele. Práce obsahuje dvě základní části – teoretickou a analytickou. V teoretické části jsou uvedena materiálová a teoretická východiska disertace. Dále je zde představen Eduard Petiška jakožto autor děl pro mladé čtenáře. Následující kapitola pojednává o adaptacích biblických příběhů pro děti a mládež z hlediska teoretického a literárněhistorického. Analytická část je tvořena interpretací předmluvy k danému Petiškovu dílu a dílčími analýzami jednotlivých izraelských příběhů. V této předmluvě vystupuje autor v roli průvodce a předává čtenářům informace rázu zeměpisného i kulturního. Zároveň je informuje o svých pramenech a záměru. Poskytuje mládeži návod k četbě příběhů. Hlavním kritériem při zpracování analýz byla srozumitelnost příběhů pro dětského adresáta. Ve středu zájmu stály tedy především: způsob, jakým mu Petiška biblickou látku přibližuje, prostředky, kterých k tomu používá, a účinky, kterých danou úpravou u mladého čtenáře dosahuje. Petiška postupuje při adaptaci izraelských bájí a pověstí jako moderní autor, respektuje novodobé výklady a interpretace starozákonních textů (midraše). Stejně jako ostatní adaptátoři Starého zákona vybírá z bible tradiční, dějově bohaté příběhy s výraznými hrdiny a pramenný text upravuje. Ve srovnání s ostatními adaptátory dané látky však Petiška ve velké míře amplifikuje. Starozákonní příběh rozvíjí řadou motivů a epizod z židovských pověstí, legend, bájí a midrašů a také apokryfů. Jeho metoda spočívající v synopsi a následné syntéze různých pramenů se vymyká dosavadní adaptační praxi. Specifičnost Petiškovy metody je ukázána na základě srovnání jeho zpracování starozákonních příběhů pro mládež s Olbrachtovou adaptací Biblické příběhy (1939). Ačkoliv díla vznikala v odlišných dobových kontextech a s různými záměry svých tvůrců, v obou případech byl hlavním kritériem autorovy práce jeho adresát. Komparace Petiškova a Olbrachtova díla probíhala v řadě kroků. Nejprve byly obě práce srovnávány se svými prameny: Olbrachtova adaptace s textem Bible kralické, v případě Eduarda Petišky byla situace vzhledem k velkému množství jeho látkových zdrojů komplikovanější. Jeho izraelské příběhy byly podrobeny jednak komparaci s textem ekumenického překladu bible, jednak s židovskými midraši. K tomuto účelu bylo použito pětisvazkové dílo Michy Josefa bin Goriona Die Sagen der Juden (1913-1927) a český překlad jeho prvních dvou svazků vydaný pod názvem Pověsti Židů (1992). Po srovnání obou adaptací s jejich prameny následuje komparativní analýza Petiškova a Olbrachtova zpracování starozákonních příběhů navzájem. Výsledkem komparací jsou analýzy všech čtrnácti Petiškových izraelských příběhů, které tvoří jádro dané disertační práce. Na základě provedené interpretace předmluvy, analýz jednotlivých příběhů a posouzení ilustrací jsme dospěli k následujícímu závěru: Čtenáři staršího školního věku jsou schopni z Petiškova zpracování pochopit biblické příběhy a jejich morální poslání. Abstract:

This introduced dissertation thesis is focused on problems of adaptation of biblical issues for children and youth. This thesis is centred on Eduard Petiška´s work Sun shined stories (1967), especially its third part Ancient Israeli Myths and legends. Petiška considers biblical stories as a part of ancient literature and important myths, not as religious texts. Consequently, he does not present biblical stories as a separate work but he thinks of them as a collection in confrontation with transmitted processes of three significant civilisations - Egypt, Mesopotamia and Israel. The thesis contains of two essential parts – theoretical and analytical. Material and theoretical dissertation solutions are introduced in the theoretical part. Further, Eduard Petiška is presented there as a youth-literature author. Next chapter discusses the adaptation of biblical stories for children and youth in a theoretical and literal-historical point. The analytical part consists of a proem interpretation and sectional analyses of individual Israeli stories. In this proem the author plays a guide role and shares geographical and cultural information with readers. At the same time, he informs about his resources and focus. He offers youth some kind of instructions to reading the stories. The main point in analyses processing was to be understandable for a child addressee. The principal focus was consequently in a way, how Petiška approaches biblical topic, used means and the achieved effect by his own arrangement on a young reader. Petiška advances in adaptation of Israeli myths as a modern author; he respects recent comments and interpretations of biblical texts (midrash). As other Old Testament adaptors, he picks out from the Bible traditional and rich story lines with outstanding characters and he modifies the resourced text. Although, in comparison with the other adaptors of the particular topic; he amplifies much more. He evolves an Old Testament story with a range of motifs and episodes from Jewish tales, legends, myths, midrash and apocrypha as well. His method, consisting of synopsis and further synthesis of various resources, is very different from the actual adaptation practice. The specificity of his method is shown in virtue of comparison of his treatment of Old Testament stories for youth with Olbracht´s adaptation of Biblical stories (1939). Although, these works were created in different period contexts and with authors´ different interests, in both cases the main criteria was their addressee. The comparison of Petiška´s and Olbracht´s work was processing in many steps. First, both works were compared with their sources; Olbracht´s adaptation was compared with the Kralice Bible, nevertheless, it was more complicated in Eduard Petiška´s case because of his big amount of the topic resources. His Israeli stories were compared with a text of an ecumenical Bible translation and with Jewish midrash texts, as well. For this proposal was used five-volume work by Micha Josef bin Gorion Die Sagen der Juden (1913 -1927) and Czech translation of his first two volumes published as Jews´ Legends (1992). After the comparison of these two adaptations with their resources, there follows comparative analysis of Petiška´s and Olbracht´s arrangement of the Old Testament stories with one another. The comparisons results constitute the analyses of all fourteen Petiška´s Israeli stories, which represent the core of my dissertation thesis. On the basis of performed proem interpretation, analyses of individual stories and evaluation of illustrations, we have come to the following conclusion: Older school-aged readers are able to understand Petiška´s arrangement of biblical stories and their moral message. His adaptation of Old Testament topic is understandable and suitable for them.
