Why is One Church’s Membership Growing and Another One’s Declining? ČCE and CB in Sociological Comparison

Abstract:

Ve své práci jsem se snažila nalézt odpověď na otázku, co mohlo způsobit změnu počtu členů v Českobratrské církvi evangelické a v Církvi bratrské mezi lety 1991 a 2001. V ČCE počet věřících, kteří se k ČCE během Sčítání lidí, domů a bytů přihlásili, výrazně poklesl, naopak v CB se počet členů nezanedbatelně zvýšil. Zaměřila jsem se na organizační strukturu obou církví, na způsob fungování celé církve i dvou sborů (v ČCE sbor v Hradišti u Nasavrk, v CB sbor v Chrudimi) a dále na formu a míru zasahování obou církví do života jednotlivce. Jsem si vědoma, že takové úzké vymezení oblasti zkoumání opomíjí řadu jiných faktorů, např. demografické složení, teologické pozadí nebo zaměření na misii. Pomocí kvalitativní výzkumné metody jsem dospěla k následujícím výsledkům. Pevná organizační struktura ČCE, jasně stanovené prvky bohoslužeb i rozdělení rolí během nich a zároveň obecné a nedirektivní požadavky vztahující se k životu členů mohou vést k vytvoření pouze volných vazeb na daný sbor (církev) a k nízké míře identifikace s danou církví jako konkrétní institucí. Naopak v CB liturgická volnost během bohoslužeb a konkrétní požadavky týkající se života člena církve způsobují pevnější zakotvení v dané skupině a vnímání ostatních členů sboru jako významných druhých. ČCE reflektuje pluralitní situaci a náboženská realita se pro ni stává jednou z mnoha realit, ve kterých dnešní člověk žije. Naopak CB usiluje o postavení náboženské reality jako reality zastřešující, tedy jako „posvátného baldachýnu“.

Abstract:

In my thesis I have tried to find an answer to the question what could have caused the shift in the number of the members of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ČCE) and of The Brethren Evangelical Free Church (CB) between the years 1991 and 2001 (as seen in the 1991 census and the 2001 census). In ČCE the number of believers distinctively declined and in CB the number of believers rapidly rose. I have focused on the organizational structure of both churches, on the functioning of the whole church and on two particular communities (in ČCE the community in Hradiště and in CB the community in Chrudim) and finally, on the form and the extent of the churches’ interference with everyday life of their believers. I am aware that such a narrow delimitation of the field of research leaves out many important factors, e.g. the demographical characters, the theological background or the focus of the churches on mission. With the help of a qualitative research strategy I have come to the following results. The firm ČCE’s organizational structure, its clearly defined elements of service and the separation of roles during service and, at the same time, general and non-directive demands related to the everyday life of the believers probably lead to only loosely felt tights to the community (church) and to low identification with the church as an institution. On the other side, CB’s liturgical freedom (lack of structure) during service and concrete demands concerning the life of the believers cause stronger identification with the community and perception of other believers as significant others. ČCE reflects pluralistic situation and the sacred reality is considered as one out of many realities in which a person lives. On the other side, CB aspires to maintain the sacred reality as an arch over all other realities, as a “sacred canopy”.
