The emotions of primary school students

Abstract:

Studie je zaměřena na emoční prožívání školní docházky žáků mladšího školního věku a věnuje se vlivu vazeb v kolektivu školní třídy na toto prožívání. Poskytuje přehled obsahů nejčastěji prožívaných pozitivních i negativních emocí, předkládá jejich kategorizaci a rozdíly v emočním prožívání mezi pohlavími i jednotlivými ročníky. Výzkumu se účastnilo 241 žáků 2. – 5. tříd ze čtyř základních škol. Data byla sbírána pomocí metody volných výpovědí, tzv. „koláčů emocí“, a krátkého sociometrického dotazníku „sociometrie školní třídy“. Analýza dat prokázala, že žáci mladšího školní věku uvádí ve svých výpovědích více pozitivních než negativních emocí a zároveň je prožívají průměrně stejně intenzivně. Chlapci a dívky se neliší v počtech uváděných emocí, liší se však v úrovni prožívání negativních emocí, jež chlapci prožívají intenzivněji. Rozdíly v emočním prožívání napříč jednotlivými ročníky se ukázaly signifikantní především mezi mladšími (2. a 3.) a staršími (4. a 5.) třídami, kdy mladší ročníky uváděly ve svých výpovědích průměrně méně negativních emocí než ročníky starší. Vztah sociometrické pozice a emocí se podařilo prokázat pouze mezi intenzitou prožívání negativních emocí a počtem negativních vazeb v kolektivu, ostatní vztahy byly zanedbatelné či nulové. Nejčastěji uváděné kategorie negativních emocí byly neobliba humanitního předmětu; strach z testů, zkoušení a diktátů a neobliba spolužáka, dítěte ve škole. Mezi nejčastěji uváděnými kategoriemi pozitivních emocí se objevily obliba uměleckého předmětu; těšení se na kamarády a obliba učitele/ky či asistenta pedagoga.

Abstract:

This study is focused on the emotional experiences of primary school students during school attendance and it deals with the effects that social bonds between the class collective have on these experiences. It gives an overview of the most common positive and negative emotions that are experienced, presents their categorization and the differences in emotional experiences between genders and individual grades. 241 students from four primary schools (second to fifth grade) have participated in this research project. The data were collected using the free statement method, also known as the “emotion pie”, and a short sociometric questionnaire called “classroom sociometry”. The data analysis has proven that primary school student are inclined to present a majority of positive emotions during their statements and that they experience both positive and negative emotions with the same intensity. There are no differences between boys and girls in the number of emotions listed, but there are differences in the level of experience concerning negative emotions, which boys experience with a greater amount of intensity. Differences in emotional experiences across different grades were shown to be significant, especially between lower (second and third) and higher (fourth and fifth) grades, where lower grades have listed a lower average amount of negative emotions than higher grades. The relation between the sociometric position and emotion has only been proven concerning the correlation between the intensity of experienced negative emotions and the number of negative bonds in the collective, other relations were negligible or non-existent. The most commonly listed categories of negative emotions are as follows: the dislike of a humanitarian subject; fear of tests, exams and dictation and the dislike of a classmate, child in school. Counted among the most common positive emotion categories were the liking of an artistic subject; looking forward to seeing friends and the appreciation of a teacher or teaching assistant.
