Language Advising of an English Teacher Helping Young Learners Develop their Learning Strategies and Facilitate the Process of Studying English Vocabulary

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá aktuálním tématem jazykového poradenství a zkoumá různé učební styly a strategie pro usnadnění pokroku mladším žáků v jejich studiu nové slovní zásoby v anglickém jazyce. Skládá se ze dvou částí – teoretické a praktické. Teoretická sekce představuje teoretické koncepty různých učebních stylů vytvořených Gabrielou Lojovou a Kateřinou Vlčkovou a učebních strategií založených na klasifikačním systému Rebeccy Oxford. Detailní studium relevantních zdrojů usnadnilo vytvoření hlavní výzkumné hypotézy, která je následně zvažována a hodnocena v praktické části této práce. Praktická sekce představuje průzkum rozličných učebních stylů mladších žáků, které autorka v současné době učí. Tato analýza vede k evaluaci žákovských učebních strategií pro zapamatování si nové slovní zásoby, které používají na počátku samotného procesu jazykového poradenství. Kvantitativní výzkum zahrnuje čtyřicet dva žáků ve věku od deseti do jedenácti let. Současně s kvantitativním výzkumem je představen i kvalitativní výzkum, který obsahuje pět případových studií, výběr žáků, kterým byl nabídnut semestr pravidelných setkání pod vedením autorky této práce. Z dat získaných tímto výzkumem vyplynuly četné argumenty podporující hlavní hypotézu této práce, tj. zda pravidelné konzultace jazykového poradenství napomáhají mladším žákům rozvinout jejich učební strategie a usnadňují proces jejich studia anglické slovní zásoby. Závěr této práce prezentuje nashromážděná fakta jak z kvantitativního, tak z kvalitativního výzkumu, vyjadřuje se k celému procesu jazykového poradenství a vyzdvihuje enormní výhody vyplývající ze získané praktické zkušenosti. Zvýšené povědomí rozličných učebních stylů a strategií je považováno za vysoce přínosné nejen pro autorku této diplomové práce, ale především pro mladší žáky. Pozoruhodná zjištění jsou shrnuta, zvážena a doplněna rozličnými návrhy pro hladké zavedení do každodenní praxe.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the current issue of language advising and explores various learning styles and strategies to facilitate the young learners´ progress in studying new English vocabulary items. It consists of two main parts – theoretical and practical. The theoretical section introduces the theoretical concepts of various learning styles developed by Gabriela Lojová and Kateřina Vlčková, and learning strategies based on strategy classification system offered by Rebecca Oxford. The detailed study of relevant sources has facilitated developing the main exploratory hypothesis which is subsequently considered and evaluated in the practical part of this work. The practical section reveals an investigation on various learning styles of the young learners the author has currently been teaching and it leads to evaluation of their learning strategies for remembering new vocabulary items they were using at the beginning of the language advising process. A quantitative research has been applied on forty-two learners aged ten to eleven. Simultaneously with the quantitative research, a qualitative survey has been conducted, based on five case studies, a selection of learners who were offered to attend a semester of regular meetings facilitated by the author of this thesis. The data obtained from the survey ensued numerous arguments supporting the main hypothesis of this work, that is to say, whether regular language advisory consultations help young learners develop their learning strategies and facilitate their studying of English vocabulary items or not. The conclusion of this thesis presents gathered facts from both quantitative and qualitative surveys and comments on the whole process of language advising, stressing the enormous benefits resulting from the gained hands-on experience. The increased awareness of various learning styles and strategies is argued to be highly profitable not only for the author of this thesis but primarily for the young learners. The remarkable findings are summarised and considered with various suggestions for smooth implementation into everyday teaching practice.
