Social Construction of Gender Relations between Roman Catholic Converts

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na sociální konstrukci genderových vztahů u lidí, kteří konvertovali k římskokatolické církvi, vyrůstali v rodině bez explicitní náboženské výchovy a nyní se nacházejí ve věku mladé dospělosti. Teoretická část pojednává o sociálním konstrukcionismu, který je hlavním východiskem práce, o problematice genderu a genderového vývoje, a o otázkách souvsejících s náboženstvím, konverzí a římskokatolickou církví včetně jejich genderových aspektů. Práce je koncipována jako kvalitativní výzkum, který má za cíl zmapovat sociální konstrukci genderových vztahů, a to především pojetí změn v genderových vztazích v souvislosti s konverzí a konstrukci genderově relevantních témat spojovaných s římskokatolickou církví. Vzorek byl vybírán metodou sněhové koule a samovýběrem, pro sběr dat byly využity polostrukturované rozhovory a pro analýzu metoda zakotvené teorie. Nejvýznamnější zjištění se týkají otázek z oblasti sexuality, které jsou respondenty a respondentkami často spojovány se změnami souvisejícími s konverzí. Naopak v oblasti genderových rolí změny popisovány nebyly, nebo nebyly spojovány s konverzí. Představy o rozdělení genderových rolí zde souvisí spíše s esencialistickým pojetím genderu. V části výzkumu zaměřené na specificky katolická témata byl ze strany respondentů a respondentek kladen největší důraz na problematiku svěcení žen, ke které byly zaujímány různorodé postoje, které byly ovšem stejně jako v otázce genderových rolí často legitimizovány poukazem na esenciální pojetí genderu.

Abstract:

This work is focused on the social construction of gender relations between the people who have converted to the Roman Catholic Church, have grown up in families without explicit religious education and now they are at young adult age. The theoretical part deals with social constructionism which is the main basic of my work. It treats of gender and gender developement problems, questions connected with religion, conversion and the Roman Catholic Church including their gender aspects. This thesis is framed as a qualitative research which should map the social construction of gender relations with concentration on gender relations changes connected with the conversion. The next aim is the construction of gender relevant topics concerning the Roman Catholic Church. This sample was chosen by snowball sampling and self-selection methods. I used semi-structured interviews for a data set collection and the method of grounded theory for analysis. The most important discovery concerns sexual questions which respondents often connect with changes related to the conversion. On the other hand they did not describe any changes of gender roles and if so, they did not connect them with conversion. Gender roles dividing is mostly related to the essentialistic gender conception. In the part concentrated on specific Roman Catholic topics the respondents emphasized the problems of women ordaining most. They adopted different views with the reference to the essentialistic gender conception.
