From Monolith to Microservices: Refactoring Patterns

Abstract:

Monolitické architektury jsou velice populárními architekturami v informačních systémech. V případech, kdy tyto systémy rostou, přibývá jejich nevýhod. Stále běžnější praktikou se stává migrace na škálovatelnější architektury. Jednou z těchto architektur jsou mikroslužby, nicméně migrace na architekturu s tak malými kontexty bývá velmi náročným úkolem. Vývojaři často spoléhají na různé migrační vzory ke snížení této náročnosti. Pro vývojaře může být velmi užitečné mít po ruce katalog migračních vzorů. Tato práce sbírá migrační vzory z knih, výzkumů a blogů, psaných experty v oblasti softwarového inženýrství. Migrační vzory jsou rozděleny do kategorií podle jejich obecného využití a ohodnoceny dle způsobu, jak jsou aplikovány a jejich vlivu na systém. Některé z těchto migračních vzorů jsou ukázany na konkrétním projektu a je zobrazeno jak by mohly fungovat v praxi a jak mohou být kombinované. Cílem ukázky aplikace migračních vzorů není pouze ukázka ale také odvození obecného návodu pro migraci.

Abstract:

Monolithic architectures are widely spread among IT systems and in cases the systems grow, monolith brings more disadvantages. It is becoming a usual practice, that monolithic systems are being migrated towards more scalable architectures. One of these architectures is microservices architecture, however, migration towards such fine-grained architecture is often a task of immense complexity. Developers may often rely on migration patterns that help to reduce this complexity by giving directions. Having a catalogue of migration patterns from monolith to microservices could be very useful for developers. This work collects migration patterns from books, research papers and from blogs written by experts in the area of software engineering. Migration patterns are categorised and given rankings based on their ways of application and their impact on the system. These patterns are applied on a concrete project to show how they could work in practice and how they can be possibly combined. The goal of the application of migration patterns is not only to show how to use them but also as a supportive research method to derive general guideline for the migration process.
