Self-help Groups for Family Carers Looking after a Close Person with Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá svépomocnými skupinami pro rodinné pečující o blízkého člověka, který onemocněl Alzheimerovou chorobou. Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem rodinní pečující reflektují svoji účast na svépomocném setkání. Diplomová práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. V teoretické části jsou popsány základní charakteristiky, diagnostika, klinické projevy a průběh Alzheimerova onemocnění, dále podoby psychické zátěže rodinných pečujích a způsoby zvládání rodinné péče. V teoretické části zaměřené na svépomocné skupiny je uvedena základní definice, psychosociální charakteristiky a dynamika, účinnost, sdílená témata a výzkumy z oblasti svépomocných skupin pro rodinné pečující o blízkého člověka s Alzheimerovou chorobou. Empirická část je založena na analýze přepisů polostrukturovaných rozhovorů vedených s dvanácti participanty - rodinnými pečujícími účastnícími se svépomocných setkání a následné analýze jejich sdělení metodou zakotvené teorie. Výsledkem bylo vytvoření 3D modelu, který se skládá z hlavní kategorie: „Subjektivní přínos ze spoluúčasti na svépomocném setkání“, ke které jsou vztaženy tři rozvíjející kategorie, tj. „Efekt svépomocného setkání“, „Psychická zátěž a vztahová (dis)kontinuita“ a „Závažnost onemocnění a náročnost péče“. Z rozhovorů s participanty byly vypracovány příběhy reflektující životní situaci každého z rodinných pečujících a jejich účast na svépomocném setkání.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to find out how family carers reflected their participation in self-help meetings. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part describes the basic characteristics, the diagnosis, the clinical symptoms and the course of the Alzheimer’s disease, as well as the carers’ different psychological burdens and the ways they cope with the care. The theoretical part focused on self-help groups gives a basic definition, psychosocial characteristics and dynamics, efficacy, shared topics and research in the field of self-help groups for family carers looking after a close person with AD. The empirical part is based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews with twelve participants, family carers attending the self-help meetings. This analysis, using the method of grounded theory, resulted in a three-dimensional model describing the family carers´ participation in the self-help meetings. The 3D model consists of the main category – "The Subjective Benefits of Participation in Self-help Meetings", which provides basis for the three evolving categories, i.e. “The Effect of the Self-help Meetings”, “The Psychological Burden and Relational (Dis)Continuity” and “The Severity of the Illness and the Demands of the Care”. Finally, based on the interviews with the participants, the thesis presents stories reflecting the life situation of each of the carers and their involvement in self-help meetings.
