Prevalence of eating disorders in female disco dance and ballet dancers

Abstract:

Sportovci věnující se esteticko-koordinačním sportům jsou jednou z nejvíce náchylnou skupinou sportovců, ke vzniku poruch příjmu potravy. Jedním z důvodů jsou patrně vysoké nároky na tělesný vzhled, související s estetickým hlediskem, zapojeným do hodnocení soutěžního výkonu. Do této skupiny patří mimo jiné i tanečníci, zejména baletky, kteří jsou známí tělesným perfekcionismem, striktními dietami a velmi štíhlými těly. Přes tyto skutečnosti stále není znám dostatek studií, které se zabývají touto problematikou. Bakalářská práce je zaměřená na porovnání rizika vzniku poruch příjmu potravy mezi tanečnicemi Disco dance, baletkami a skupinou sportovkyň z jiných sportovních disciplín (kontrolní). Původní předpoklad očekával nejvyšší výskyt poruch příjmu potravy ve skupině baletek. Zatímco kontrolní skupina by měla vykazovat minimální, až žádné riziko. V teoretické části jsou popsány příslušné poruchy příjmu potravy a jejich příznaky. Dále je zde možné najít informace o jednotlivých tanečních stylech, jejich historii a současné podobě. Pro praktickou část byl využitý standardizovaný dotazník EAT-26. V rámci kapitol této části je popsán výzkumný vzorek, metodika, analýza dat a limitace. Následně jsou v práci prezentovány zjištěné výsledky. BMI neprokázalo významné rozdíly mezi skupinami, nejnižší hodnoty měla skupina baletek s průměrem BMI=20,06. Naopak nejvyšší hodnoty vykazovala skupina sportovkyň z jiných sportů, kdy průměrné BMI=23,99. V druhé části dotazníku vykazovala nejvyšší riziko vzniku PPP rovněž skupina baletek. Zde získalo ?20 bodů 52,9 % respondentek. Ve skupině Disco dance získalo ?20 bodů 23,5 % respondentek. Zatímco ve skupině ostatních sportovkyň, neprokázal narušené stravovací chování nikdo. Čímž byl potvrzen původní předpoklad.

Abstract:

Athletes involved in aesthetic-coordination sports are one of the most susceptible groups of athletes to developing eating disorders. One reason for this is probably the high demands on physical appearance, related to the aesthetic aspect involved in the evaluation of competitive performance. This group includes, among others, dancers, especially ballerinas, who are known for physical perfectionism, strict diets and very slim bodies. Despite these facts, there are still not enough studies known that address this issue. This bachelor thesis aims to compare the risk of eating disorders between female Disco dancers, ballerinas and a group of female athletes from other sports disciplines (control). The original hypothesis expected the highest incidence of eating disorders in the group of ballerinas. While the control group should show minimal to no risk. In the theoretical part, the relevant eating disorders and their symptoms are described. In addition, information about the different dance styles, their history and current form can be found. For the practical part, the standardized questionnaire EAT-26 was used. Within the chapters of this part, the research sample, methodology, data analysis and limitations are described. Subsequently, the thesis presents the findings. BMI showed no significant differences between the groups, with the lowest values in the ballerina group with a mean BMI=20.06. On the other hand, the highest values were shown by the group of female athletes from other sports, with an average BMI=23.99. In the second part of the questionnaire, the ballerina group also showed the highest risk of PPP. Here, 52.9% of respondents scored ?20 points. In the Disco dance group, 23.5% of respondents scored ?20 points. While in the group of other female athletes, no one showed disordered eating behavior. This confirmed the original assumption.
