Beginnings of the American Movie Industry

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine beginnings of the American film industry, the way it had evolved until 1950s, and in what way did it influence the society at the time. The analyzed period begins at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when cinema and movie industry started becoming a crucial part of the American culture and everyday life. The thesis furthermore describes the creation and uprising of the film industry starting in New York, with subsequent response of the society. Followed by a chapter concerning Hollywood as the world-wide known center of movie production. Moreover, the reaction and effects of the stock market crash are described within this chapter. The studio system and significant film studios such as Warner Brothers Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, MGM, Universal Studios, their creation, and uprising is covered in the following chapter. Furthermore, the star system with the first movie stars and their influence on the society at the time is described in the next chapter of this thesis. Introduction of sound is the name of the subsequent chapter, where the transition to sound movies is analyzed, with the changes in the production and broadcasting across the country, along with the reaction of the society. The last chapter concerns the development and new approaches of the movie industry after 1945.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá počátky filmového průmyslu v USA a zkoumá, jakým způsobem se toto odvětví průmyslu vyvinulo do první poloviny 20. století, a rovněž jeho vlivem na společnost tohoto období. Zkoumané období začíná na přelomu 19. a 20. století, kdy se filmový průmysl začal stávat součástí americké kultury a každodenního života. Tato práce dále popisuje vznik a vývoj filmového průmyslu s počátky v New Yorku, a následným přesunem do oblasti Californie, kde vznikla ikona filmové produkce Hollywood, a kromě toho i reakci tohoto průmyslu na krach newyorské burzy v roce 1929. Fenoménu filmových studií se věnuje následující kapitola, ve které je prozkoumán vznik a vývoj filmových gigantů, jako například Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, MGM či Paramount Pictures, včetně vytvoření jednotného systému produkce. Další kapitola je věnována filmovému hvězdnému systému, filmovým hvězdám a jejich vlivu na tehdejší společnost a politickou situaci. Dále je zkoumáno zahrnutí zvuku do filmové produkce, se změnami v tvorbě a projekci napříč Spojenými státy, společně s přijetím této změny společností. Poslední kapitola je věnována vývoji filmové produkce po roce 1945.
