Men's experience with the process of their partner's abortion

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkušeností mužů s umělým přerušením těhotenství partnerky. Výzkumná pozornost byla zaměřena na muže, nacházející se v době zákroku v období vynořující se dospělosti. V zahraničí je výzkum týkající se mužů a interrupce rozvíjející se oblastí, cílem je otevřít toto téma i v českém prostředí a zaměřit se na konkrétní vývojové období. Jedná se o kvalitativní, explorativní studii. Polostrukturované rozhovory s pěti muži byly analyzovány perspektivou interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Na základě analýzy byly identifikovány hlavní témata „Racionální a emocionální rovina“, „Já jako rodič?“, „Interrupce mě poznamenala“, „Pocit bezmoci“ a „Vnímal jsem okolní lidi“. Témata jsou dále rozpracována a přiblížena pomocí čtrnácti podkategorií. Výsledky ve velké míře potvrzují dosavadní poznání ze zahraničních empirických studií, komplexně je shrnují a zároveň přinášejí nová témata. Významným zjištěním je pohled na zkušenost rozumovou a emocionální perspektivou. Z kontextu vynořující se dospělosti se zdají být specifické kategorie „Tlak okolí versus autonomie“ či „Ne/vyzrálost“. Interpretace, limity a další možnosti výzkumu jsou zmíněny v diskuzi.

Abstract:

The main topic of this master‘s thesis is the male experience of their partners’ abortion. Attention is exclusively centred on the men who were in the emerging adulthood life stage while an abortion procedure was performed. Research on the abortion experience for male partners conducted abroad is a growing area of study; the primary objective is therefore to introduce the subject matter into the Czech research community and focus on the specific development period across the life course. Qualitative explorative research design is employed. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, semi-structured interviews with five male respondents were analysed. Based on the analysis, the following key issues were identified: “Rational and emotional level”, “Me as a parent?”, “Abortion has affected me”, “Feeling of helplessness” and “I was aware of my surroundings”. The issues are further elaborated into fourteen subcategories. Results to a large extent confirm previous findings from related foreign empirical studies, summarise them thoroughly and bring up new topics. Moreover, the thesis offers a perceptive insight into experience of reason and an emotional perspective. With regard to emerging adulthood, the following categories seem to be specific: “Neighbourhood pressure versus autonomy” or “Im/maturity”. Finally, interpretations, limits and further research suggestions are discussed.
