Implementation of Picture Exchange Communication System at pupil at special primary school

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá realizací výměnného obrázkového komunikačního systému (VOKS) u konkrétního dítěte (Jany), které navštěvuje základní školu speciální. Celá práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. První kapitola teoretické části diplomové práce se zabývá problematikou mentálního postižení, charakteristikou a stupni mentálního postižení s důrazem na oblast středně těžkého mentálního postižení a specifiky vývoje dítěte se středně těžkým mentálním postižením. Druhá kapitola se věnuje komunikaci, verbální a neverbální komunikaci a narušené komunikační schopnosti. Ve třetí kapitole jsou charakterizovány alternativní a augmentativní komunikační systémy s pomůckami a bez pomůcek a VOKS. V čtvrté kapitole je popsán samotný výzkum. Hlavním cílem výzkumu byla analýza rozvoje komunikačních schopností konkrétního dítěte v nácviku metodiky VOKS. V rámci hlavního cíle byly stanoveny čtyři dílčí cíle - popis celkového stavu dítěte před začátkem nácviku metodiky VOKS (případová studie), popis začátku nácviku metodiky VOKS, popis průběhu nácviku metodiky VOKS a analýza změn, oproti počátečnímu stavu dítěte, způsobených vlivem nácviku a užívání metodiky VOKS. Z provedeného výzkumu vyplynulo, že nácvik metodiky přispěl u Jany k většímu zájmu o komunikaci, aktivitě v sociálních kontaktech se známými lidmi, větší aktivní slovní zásobě a snaze tvořit krátké věty. V průběhu výzkumu však u Jany nedošlo k zlepšení výslovnosti. To znamená, že její řeč je stále velmi špatně srozumitelná.

Abstract:

This master thesis is focused on applied using of a Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) by a specific child (Jana) who is a pupil of an elementary special school. The entire master thesis is divided into four parts. The first part of mentioned master thesis is focused on the issue of mental disability, features and levels of mental disability with emphasis on moderately severe mental disability and on development of a child with moderately severe mental disability. The second part describes communication (verbal and nonverbal) and disrupted communication ability. Alternative and augmentative communicative systems with and without the communication aid (supports) and PECS are described in the third part of this thesis. The research work is situated in the fourth part of this master thesis. The main aim of this thesis was to analyse the speech development of specific child with using of PECS. There were also four sub-objectives, such as the description of the conditions of mentioned child before the PECS method application (case study), description of the beginning and the course of the PECS application and analysis of changes in conditions of mentioned child compare to the initial conditions. According to the results of this thesis, the use of PECS led to increased interest of Jana in communication, higher activity in social contacts with known persons, improved active vocabulary and to attempts to make the short sentences. There was not observed any improvement in pronunciation. It means that her speech is still poorly understandable.
