ROI of Libraries

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je ekonomická metoda ROI (Return on Investment), která slouží ke zhodnocení výnosů vzhledem k investovanému kapitálu. Uplatnění nachází nejen v knihovnách, na které se tento text zaměřuje, ale i v mnohých dalších typech organizací, projektů i v případě jednotlivých investic. První část práce objasňuje pojem ROI. Pojednává obecně o této metodě výpočtu návratnosti investic, jejím vývoji, významu, metodologii a postupu, jak ji vykonat. Ostatní části práce se zaměřují na měření ROI přímo v knihovnách. Jsou zde popsány důvody, proč by knihovny ROI měly využívat a jak jeho výsledky správně sdělit zainteresovaným osobám. Zbývající úsek této práce se soustřeďuje na měření ROI v akademických knihovnách. Uveden je popis, co a jak by tyto instituce měly měřit, aby co nejlépe vyjádřily svou hodnotu a prospěšnost vůči zřizovatelské organizaci (univerzitě). Tento postup je rozdělen do dvou oblastí. První z nich jsou přínosy spojené s přístupem k elektronickým internetovým zdrojům a zejména jejich využití v procesu získávání grantů. Druhá oblast se zaměřuje na ostatní přínosy a projekt Lib-Value, který se jejich vyčíslováním zabývá.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is an economic method called ROI (Return on Investment). This method is used for evaluating a profit gained from an investment. It is applicable not only in libraries, which this text focus on, but also in many different types of institutions, projects and single investments. The first part of this thesis elucidate the ROI conception in general, including its history, significance, methodology and techniques how to conduct it. The next part concentrates on accomplishing the ROI in libraries. Reasons why libraries should use the ROI methodology and how to communicate the results of this measurement to the stakeholders are described. The third part focus solely on measuring ROI in academic libraries. It includes some advice how to express their value and usefulness to the founder institution (university) the best. This procedure is divided into two fields. The first is about benefits connected with the access to electronic information resources and particularly its use in grand-obtaining process. The second field aims at "other benefits" and project called Lib-Value which deals with their quantification.
