Global Voices

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis introduces the age of the internet as a new age of information processing and shows how translation is included into this situation by employing the example of the organization Global Voices. It presents Global Voices as a community of volunteer writers and translators who try to bring news from all over the world, particularly from marginalized communities. This research is dedicated to understanding the relationship between translation and power, democracy, and human and civil rights. The thesis also assesses the advantages and disadvantages of texts being translated by volunteers, examines some translated articles and concentrates on the German, Czech, English and Spanish sections of Global Voices.

Abstract:

Magisterská práce uvádí dobu internetu jako novou dobu zpracování informací a na příkladu organizace Global Voices ukazuje, jak je jí ovlivněno překládání. Práce představuje Global Voices jako komunitu dobrovolných autorů a překladatelů, kteří se snaží přinášet zprávy z celého světa, především z jinak přehlížených oblastí. Dále se zabývá vztahem mezi překládáním a mocí, demokracií, lidskými a občanskými právy. Jsou rozebrány výhody a nevýhody plynoucí z toho, že texty překládají dobrovolníci. Práce se věnuje přeloženým článkům a soustředí se na německou, českou, anglickou a španělskou sekci Global Voices.
