European parliament elections and the theory of the second order election

Abstract:

Teorie druhořadých voleb je v současnosti převládající teorií pro popsání a vysvětlení výsledků voleb do Evropského parlamentu. Tato práce má dva cíle. V první, teoretické části je popsána cesta, která vedla k zavedení přímých voleb do Evropského parlamentu, ale se zatím chybějícím jednotným volebním systémem. Dále je zde popsán vývoj teorie druhořadých voleb a některé studie, které aplikovaly její hypotézy. Hlavní, praktická část této práce se soustřeďuje na testování této teorie na všech výsledcích voleb do Evropského parlamentu od roku 1979. Pro testování je použita regresní analýza, což je statistická metoda umožňující měřit závislosti mezi různými proměnnými. Konkrétně je touto analýzou zkoumána volební účast ve volbách do Evropského parlamentu a její rozdíl oproti volbám do parlamentů národních a dále také rozdíly mezi zisky stran na národní a evropské úrovni.

Abstract:

Elections to the European parliament in the view of the second-order elections theory The second-order elections theory is nowadays the most important theory trying to describe and interpret the results of the European parliament elections. The aim of this study is twofold. In the theoretical part I describe the way to direct elections to the European parliament under (still failing) universal suffrage as well as the bright spectrum of different studies using this theory. The main, analytical part of this study focuses on testing the hypotheses of the second-order elections theory on all results of the European parliament elections since 1979. The testing is based on the method of regression analysis, which enables to measure dependencies between different variables. The subjects of this analysis are, on the one hand, turnout in the European elections in comparison to turnout in respective national elections, and on the other hand the difference between gains of the parties on European and national level.
