Origami as traditional Japanese art and its development

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou origami v kontextu tradiční japonských umění. V prvních kapitolách vymezuje tradiční japonské umění skrze podrobnější rozbor jednotlivých pojmů. Tradice je charakterizována podle Edwarda Shilse a při definici umění se zaměřujeme především na teorii Monroe C. Beardsleyho. Pro určení, zda se origami může nazývat „japonským“ uměním se v další kapitole zabýváme konkrétními principy japonské estetiky, které se mohou projevit v origami. Z těchto prvních kapitol vyvozujeme charakteristiky tradičního japonského umění, které v následujících kapitolách postupně rozebíráme v kontextu origami. Nejprve se zabýváme prvky tradice v origami, a proto uvádíme informace týkající se historie a vývoje origami. Následně ho rozebíráme jako japonské umění, pro což si nejprve uvádíme několik významných osobností, které origami na umění posunuli nebo se svou tvorbou stali inspirací pro ostatní umělce. V této kapitole dále rozebíráme propojení japonské estetiky s origami skrze využívané papíry a modely. Na závěr též ukazujeme, že origami není pouze záležitostí papíru, ale že jeho principy mají využití i ve vědě.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of origami in the context of traditional Japanese art. In the first chapters, traditional Japanese art is defined through a more detailed analysis of those individual terms. Tradition is characterized according to Edward Shils and in defining art we focus primarily on Monroe C. Beardsley's theory. To determine whether origami can be called “Japanese” art, the next chapter deals with the specific principles and ideals of Japanese aesthetics, which may be reflected in origami. From these first chapters we deduce the characteristics of traditional Japanese art and one by one we analyse them in the context of origami. First, we investigate the elements of tradition in origami, therefore we provide information on history and development of origami. Subsequently, we discuss it as Japanese art, for which we first mention a few significant personalities, who have helped to make origami an art or whose work have become an inspiration to other artists. In this chapter we also investigate the connection between Japanese aesthetics and origami through usually used papers and models. Finally, we also show that origami is not only a matter of paper, but that its principles are also used in science.
