Dying from a nurse´s perspective

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem této studie bylo analyzovat, jak sestry na lůžkových odděleních ve zdravotnických zařízeních vnímají téma smrti a umírání u svých pacientů. V rámci výzkumu jsme se zaměřili na osobní zkušenosti a emocionální reakce sester, které se starají o umírající pacienty. Metodika: Výzkum byl zpracován formou kvalitativního šetření. Shromažďování dat probíhalo prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, které byly vedeny na základě dopředu předpřipraveného scénáře a se souhlasem účastníka. Rozhovory se uskutečnily v období od 1. prosince 2023 do 19. prosince 2023. Jednotlivé rozhovory byly zaznamenány a převedeny do písemné formy prostřednictvím doslovných transkripcí. Výsledky: Na základě analýzy dat byly vytvořeny tři hlavní kategorie: subjektivní vnímání smrti v praxi; etické aspekty; ošetřovatelské problémy. Podle odpovědí sester byly odhaleny společné prvky v osobním vnímání tématu smrti. Na druhou stranu se zároveň objevily i rozdíly, které představují aspekty osobnosti každého účastníka nebo jsou odrazem jejich rozdílných zkušeností. Závěr: V závěrečném shrnutí lze konstatovat, že si sestry díky práci s umírajícími uvědomují, že je smrt součást života a zároveň tuto práci berou jako součást svého povolání. Přestože se sestry snaží zajistit pacientům důstojné poslední chvíle, kvalita poskytované péče často neodpovídá jejich očekávání. Je zřejmé, že je potřeba implementovat zlepšení v různých aspektech této specifické oblasti zdravotní péče.

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse how nurses in inpatient wards in healthcare institutions perceive the topic of death and dying in their patients. We focused on the personal experiences and emotional reactions of nurses caring for dying patients. Methodology: The research was conducted in the form of a qualitative investigation. The data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, which were conducted based on a pre-prepared scenario and with the participant's consent. The interviews took place between 1 December 2023 and 19 December 2023. Individual interviews were recorded and converted into written form through verbatim transcriptions. Results: Based on the data analysis, three main categories were created: subjective perceptions of death in practice; ethical aspects; and nursing issues. The nurses' responses revealed common elements in their personal perception of the topic of death. On the other hand, differences also emerged, representing aspects of each participant's personality or reflecting their different experiences. Conclusion: In conclusion, it can be stated that nurses, because of their work with the dying, realize that death is a part of life and at the same time take this work as part of their profession. Although nurses try to ensure that patients have a dignified last moments, the quality of care provided often falls short of their expectations. It is therefore clear that improvements need to be implemented in various aspects of this specific area of healthcare.
