Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá nebezpečné vlivy patriarchální společnosti na postavení žen. Zabývá se jejich promítnutím do literárních děl, konkrétně do gotických románů. Práce se dělí na teoretickou část a literární analýzu. Teoretická část seznamuje čtenáře se základními znaky gotického románu. Dále se zabývá zkoumáním Freudova konceptu, který je známý jako „the uncanny“. Obsahuje rovněž informace o životě a literární tvorbě Emily Brontë a Angely Carter. Druhá část se pokouší analyzovat vzdorující ženské hrdinky, které se objevují ve Wuthering Heights od Emily Brontë a v románu Heroes and Villains od Angely Carter. Cílem práce je popsat různé způsoby, jak ženské spisovatelky používají „the uncanny“ koncept, aby vysvobodily své literární hrdinky od útlaku patriarchální společnosti.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with harmful impact of patriarchal society on a position of women and its projection into literature, specifically into Female Gothic novels. The thesis consists of the theoretical part and analysis. The theoretical part introduces its readers with the basic characteristics of Female Gothic. It focuses on explanation of the Freudian concept of “the uncanny” and it also provides information about lives and works of Emily Brontë and Angela Carter. Second part of this thesis attempts to analyse two rebellious female characters of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Angela Carter's Heroes and Villains. It aims to explore how British women authors apply the Gothic concept of “the uncanny” in different ways in order to liberate their female literary characters from oppression of the patriarchal society.
