Good Language Learners' Communication Strategies in Speaking as a Language Skill

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce je popsat, které komunikační strategie používají úspěšní žáci v řečové dovednosti mluvení v angličtině jako cizím jazyce na konci nižšího sekundárního vzdělávání při konkrétních jazykových úlohách v testu KET, které komunikační strategie přitom deklarují a které komunikační strategie používají obecně nad rámec daných úloh. Pro zjištění komunikačních strategií byly analyzovány transkripce audiozáznamů a videozáznamů realizace úloh a jejich deklarované použití je zjišťováno pomocí nástroje využívajícího komiksové bubliny a pomocí polostrukturovaného interview. Komunikační strategie jsou zasazeny do kontextu řečové dovednosti mluvení, je tudíž zkoumán i celkový mluvený projev těchto žáků a jeho typické znaky pohledem konverzační analýzy. Prostřednictvím polostrukturovaného interview je rovněž zjišťováno, jak se tito úspěšní žáci učí řečové dovednosti mluvení, jaká jsou jejich přesvědčení a jaký je jejich postoj k chybování. Výsledky výzkumného šetření dokládají snahu úspěšných žáků se během svého mluveného projevu současně zaměřit na přesnost i plynulost. Rovněž jsou u těchto žáků patrné socioafektivní strategie a jejich ochota riskovat při komunikaci nebo specifické postupy při žádosti o pomoc. Úspěšní žáci vykazují lepší schopnost sebereflexe a během jejich mluveného projevu často dochází k sebeopravě. Mezi doporučení pro práci s těmito úspěšnými žáky patří zvyšování povědomí o komunikačních strategiích, povzbuzování autonomie žáka, poukázání na důležitost zapojení neverbálních strategií či explicitní výuka výslovnosti a její systematický rozvoj.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to describe which communication strategies are applied by good language learners in speaking English as a foreign language at the end of lower secondary education in specific language tasks of the KET test, which communication strategies are declared by them, and which communication strategies are used by them in general and not solely in the limited setting of the specific tasks. Communication strategies are analysed from audio- and video-recordings transcriptions of the task completion and their declared application is observed via a research instrument using templates and via a semi-structured interview. Furthermore, communication strategies are placed within the context of speaking as a language skill and in relation to this, these pupils’ overall speaking is observed as well as its typical features from the perspective of conversation analysis. By the means of the semi-structured interview, these good language learners’ process of learning speaking as a language skill is analysed, as well as their beliefs and their attitude towards mistakes. The research results demonstrate the good language learners’ effort to simultaneously focus both on accuracy and fluency of their spoken production. Likewise, socioaffective strategies and learners’ willingness to risk in communication are characteristic as well as specific ways of asking for help. The good language learners show better self-reflection ability and during their spoken production, there is frequent occurrence of self-repair. Several ways of work with these good language learners are recommended including increasing the communication strategies awareness, pupil’s autonomy encouragement, pointing out the importance of nonverbal strategies involvement or explicit instruction of pronunciation and its systematic development.
