Climate senses: Artistic research project exploring climate

Abstract:

This artistic research explores climate and its complexities, focusing on its vast temporalities, spatialities, and intricate phenomena. Initially, the thesis examines how we perceive climate through statistics, narratives, and scientific facts, highlighting the limitations of human perception in understanding climate fully. Inspired by diatoms, photosynthesizing microalgae, and their stories in, through, and as climate, this research constructs alternative narratives beyond the Anthropocene. The research combines field observations, microscopic examinations, satellite data analysis, discussions, samples, photographs, diagrams, and algorithms to weave these climatic stories of diatoms. The thesis underscores the importance of embracing diverse narratives to move beyond anthropocentric views and highlights the necessity of multiple approaches to understanding climate, endorsing non-human experiences in, through, and as climate.

Abstract:

Tento umělecký výzkum zkoumá klima a jeho komplexitu, zaměřuje se na jeho rozsáhlé časovosti, prostorovosti a složité jevy. Nejprve se práce zabývá tím, jak vnímáme klima prostřednictvím statistik, příběhů a vědeckých faktů, a zdůrazňuje omezenost lidského vnímání pro úplné porozumění klimatu. Inspirován rozsivkami, fotosyntetizujícími mikrořasami, a jejich příběhy v, skrze a jako klima, tento výzkum konstruuje alternativní narativy mimo Antropocén. Kombinuje terénní pozorování, mikroskopická zkoumání, analýzu satelitních dat, diskuse, vzorky, fotografie, diagramy a algoritmy ke tkaní těchto klimatických příběhů rozsivek. Tato práce zdůrazňuje důležitost přijímání různorodých narativů, které se snaží překonat antropocentrické pohledy, a vyzdvihuje nezbytnost více přístupů k porozumění klimatu, podporujících ne-lidské zkušenosti v, skrze a jako klima.
